Hi Dominique, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thank you so much! I’ve been doing great.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Use Me”?
Sure! The song is about being super into someone and telling them that even if they don’t feel the same way, you’ll still do whatever they need just to be around them. Instrumentally, the track is pretty upbeat, but the lyrics are a little dark. I made the production super simple so that the focus could be on the melodies and storyline.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
The song was inspired by an experience I had collaborating with another artist, but that wasn’t the first time I’d felt the feelings I describe in the track, so I was able to draw upon past experiences as well.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
I would love to do that, but only if I got an opportunity to work with a proper budget. Maybe sometime in the future…
How was the recording and writing process?
It was the only song I worked on for a month. I wrote the lyrics over the course of weeks and made a bunch of edits. It was a super emotional process and I broke down a lot while figuring out the lyrics.
What role does NYC play in your writing?
It definitely provides a ton of inspiration.
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are covering someone else than when you are writing your own original material?
Yeah, for sure. When I’m covering a track, I’m mostly trying to figure out how I can make an already existing work my own, but when I’m writing my own music, I’m just experimenting and going with the flow.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Maybe! I honestly haven’t thought that far ahead. If I end up writing a bunch of tracks that sounds like they’re a part of a cohesive body of work, then I’ll definitely consider making an EP.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
Not yet 🙂
Any plans to hit the road?
Hopefully one day! As of now, nothing’s set in stone.
What else is happening next in Dominique’s world?
I’m still working on my live show and preparing some other new music. Hopefully lots more exciting things to come later this year 🙂
