Melbourne’s ambient electronic three-piece Rat & Co continue to reveal more layers to their transcendental sound, as Joshua Delaney comes into the fore on third single ‘Control’, taken from the forthcoming ‘Third Law’ LP on Smooch Records. Listen here
John Waller’s pulsing electric chords provide a tranquil bed for Delaney’s otherworldly vocoder vocals on this calm and reflective moment in the journey of Rat & Co’s latest record. The atmospheric instrumental perfectly encapsulates the post apocalyptic theme of the song, highlighting two vastly different scenarios for the future of man-kind. Delaney’s lyrics hold an authoritative tone as they guide you repeatedly through the track, despite their uncertain message… ‘unfold control, we are the other one, the other one, our hearts are cold, we’ll start again, just start again’.
This element of uncertainty is also carried through to its artwork, mastered by the creative studio John Fish. The artwork merges two juxtaposed landscapes, one industrial and one baron – beautifully reflecting the two uncertain futures highlighted throughout the song.
With their album out at the end of August, Delaney states “Control has been my favourite song on the album since the very start, and it’s a huge step forward personally for me as the lead singer”.
‘Control’ opens the final chapter of their dystopian story, following previous singles ‘A.I’ and ‘Soldiers’, yet there’s still no telling where this one will end.
