Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Are You Even There?”?
The song is definitely a bit of a departure from out last ep ‘So This Is Home’. The song is more melodic and catchier but it still has that ‘THP’ vibe that we always inject into our songs. I think some people are going to be surprised when they hear it, but at the same time if you’re a fan of the band you’ll be able to understand the progression.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
This is a very personal song to me. Without going into too much detail, the song is about something that happened in my life to those close to me and it certainly made me look at things around me differently. When I was first writing the lyrics they were coming from a place of great sadness but as time has progressed they’ve begun to represent hope to me a lot more.
How was the film experience?
Filming the video was great! We worked with Adam Fitch who had previously made us a lyric video for our song ‘Long Winters’. Due to the nature of what the song was about it we didn’t really want a video that told the story or anything like that, instead we asked Adam to come up with a concept inspired by the song. So we filmed myself and our friend Tiffany in this white void always searching, but never finding each other. We also wanted to go against the grain of band music videos and not perform together at all – so we shot all our performances separately to give the feeling of distance.
How was the recording and writing process?
Sometimes we can take a long time deliberating over the composition of a song – but this song actually came together really fast – i guess sometimes things just click. It very quickly became one of our favourites to play – we put it in our set to see how people reacted to it live and we kept getting compliments on the song – so we demoed it then made plans to go to Bandit Studio to record it with Jonny Renshaw.
What was it like to work with Jonny Renshaw and how did that relationship develop?
So we felt it had been awhile since we’d put any new music out so wanted to record and release a new single. We looked into a few different producers but we were drawn to Jonny’s production style as we felt he had a great grasp on how to convey both power and melody, both in his recordings and in his own band Devil Sold His Soul.
How much has he been influencing the record?
Once we got in the studio it was amazing how well the song came together – Jonny had some great ideas to help us lift the song even further. When we got the mix back we were all blown away, and all agreed it was the best thing we’d ever worked on! This is why we made the decision to book back in again with Jonny to go and record 3 more tracks to finish of the EP.
How has Underoath and He Is Legend influence your writing?
We have a lot of diverse influences as a band, but one thing i think we all agree on is we really like it when a band create a vibe or atmosphere with their music, and this is something we try to do with THP. We don’t feel the need to follow trends or to try to pander etc, we just hope that people appreciate our music for what it is – heartfelt songs played with passion. So in terms of how those bands have influenced our music – i guess i would say we’re drawn to bands like Underoath and He Is Legend, and also bands such as Circa Survive, Thrice and AFI because these bands don’t sound just like ‘everybody else’ but what they do is done with complete conviction and honesty.
