INTERVIEW: Ruben Young

Hi Ruben, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Haha, thanks for having me!

I’m doing great! Currently coming off of back to back shows, opening for The Chainsmokers and Classified; so life has been absolutely crazy. But amazing forsure.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Bad Habits”?

Oh man, where to begin?

“Bad Habits” is the title single from my upcoming debut record “The Bad Habits EP”. It’s my favourite song – I really mean that. I have been listening to it for almost 2 years and I still haven’t gotten sick of it, haha. I wrote it on my piano, but I always envisioned/heard a soul groove and a hip hop beat on it. I saw Classified by total coincidence at a party in early 2016 and had a heart attack because I knew he’d be the perfect fit. I snuck my way into VIP, bought 2 beers, and went to say “what’s up”. 4 months later I was at his studio in Enfield, Nova Scotia, where we made Bad Habits. This August, it’s going to radio across Canada, and I can’t wait for that chapter to begin.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote it in the fall of 2015, following my “relapse” for a girl I’d been chasing since I was 16 years old. She’s never been good for me, and I’ve known it all along. She was actually the little sister of a highschool friend of mine, so we were too scared to tell anyone. So we kept our ‘relationship’ a secret, and it became more of an affair. She was my forbidden secret – my bad habit. I think everyone’s fallen for someone who they couldn’t get over; even though they knew they needed to. For me, she was dangerous, and I loved that about her. “Bad Habits” is an ode to our vices and the fun we have giving into them.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Ohhh yes. I wrote the video treatment with a super talented Canadian director (top secret) a few weeks ago. I can’t wait to bring it to life soon.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was honestly a dream. To sit in a room for 3 days and just vibe with Class was one of the best experiences of my career. We love the same music, and I think our personalities made a great fit. I was genuinely intimidated and nervous about working with someone with so much cred and experience in making hits; but he made me feel welcome as an artist. This song is a legitimate collaboration. My guy Spencer Cheyne jumped in later and mixed it here in Calgary at OCL Studios, and I think he slayed it.

What was it like to work with Classified and how did that relationship develop?

Class has been like a big brother since my trip out to NS. He has so much wisdom, and I think he’s passionate about developing hungry young artists – Ria Mae, etc. He actually had me open for him in Calgary, and 5 mins before the show, asked me to come on stage during his set and perform Bad Habits together. That was the greatest moment for me. I’ll cherish that forever.

How much did he influence the song?

Within 5 seconds, you can tell Class produced it. It’s got his ‘vintage’ sound all over it.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Yup! As I mentioned, “The Bad Habits EP” is on its way. I don’t want to give too much away, but I will say that it features my 2 previously released singles, “Running For You” and “Take Her Down”. It’s a record for R&B, electro and pop fans from The Weekend to Mura Masa to Justin Timberlake.

Any tentative release date or title in mind? / Any plans to hit the road?

I can’t wait to get out and tour soon. I have some big goals for my live show, and based on this summer (opening for Akon, Classified and The Chainsmokers), I think we’re on track to get there. Baby steps. I’ll keep you posted on all dates on Instagram (hit me up @therubs)

10. What else is happening next in Ruben Young’s world?

This is literally it. I’m obsessed with my career, haha. I’m 25, I have my degree in finance, I have a super supportive family, and I have an appetite to smash the goals I’ve set for myself, so I have nothing holding me back. I just want to build this thing, one brick at a time; starting with Bad Habits this August.

Thank you guys!
