INTERVIEW: James Barker Band
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Can’t complain! We’ve been crazy busy and that’s exactly how we like it!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Chills”?
Chills is a song that I wrote a while back, almost 2 years now. It’s crazy to think that it’s been around that long and is only starting to pick up momentum now. We’ve been playing it in our set for over a year, and it was one of those songs that fans instantly latched onto.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I don’t know if there was a particular event per say, but I think that when we wrote it we were just playing off that whole relatable idea of getting “chills” from a significant other. More specifically on a first date, and how those first meetings of any couple are memories that really stick with you forever.
How was the film experience?
The filming for Chills was a lot different than we’ve done in the past. It was the first time we’d recorded in a real filming studio. Our videos in the past have focused more on the “live concert” side, where Chills was definitely a more abstract, artistic video idea. It was a really really cool video shoot!
How was the recording and writing process?
The recording process for Chills was really cool. We were all super pumped because with Lawn Chair Lazy and Just Sayin’ we had just been looking at the near future, focusing on one single at a time. When it came to Chills we knew we were starting to put together an E.P., and we wanted to make sure each song had a different feel and vibe. That meant trying a lot of different sounds and ideas.
The writing process for all of our music is pretty much the same. I pretty much write everything with a handful of writers who we are good friends with. Gavin Slate, Travis Wood, Donovan Woods and Todd Clark. They are amazing writers and we always seem to come up with something really cool. I think one the most important parts about how we write is that we never give up on a song unless we are completely satisfied, and sometimes that means getting together four or five times. It’s always worth it to take the extra time.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
We don’t have any set dates or anything like that, but we are defiantly looking to release either another E.P. or a full album by next spring. We’re constantly writing and adding to our collection of songs, and so you could say that we’re already working on the next project!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
The rough plan would be next spring, but no hard set dates yet!
Any plans to hit the road?
We’re working right now on a head-lining Canada wide tour for this fall, and then hopefully sometime early next spring we’ll be hitting the road in the U.S.
What else is happening next in James Barker Band’s world?
Right now we’re spending the majority of our time touring through the United States promoting Chills. It’s been a crazy ride and we’re having so much fun getting to see all kinds of new places and meeting all kinds of amazing people!
