Lovely. I’m riding a wave and the wave is my dreams.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Oceans”?
Yes! Oceans is an important song to me. I wrote it going through a hard time in my life. It’s about possibilities.. “Life is like an ocean, it’s wide and it’s open. Possibilities floating around in the sea..” My hope is that it gives people hope, and courage to dream again.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Yes, heartbreak which led to a sense of despair. That feeling like there is nothing out there for you… when there is more out there than you could even imagine.
How was the filming experience?
So much fun! I did it with some of my closest friends and the amazing community of Matanzas, Cuba and Little Corn Island, Nicaragua! Shout outs!
The single comes off your new album The Climb – what’s the story behind the title?
Yes, a simple story that a girl I knew while living in Mexico told me, about how she was an apple in the tree but way up at the top and that I had to climb to be with her – had a huge effect on me. It made me consider how I was interacting within a relationship context. It also made me think what a woman is worth, what I am worth. So I really wanted to make music that speaks to these things.
How was the recording and writing process?
Awesome, I recorded this with Tyler Emond a huge talent from Toronto, Ontario. Writing the song was very easy, it just came out of me. It was slower when I first wrote it but then I felt like it needed a beach vibe.
Having lived in different countries among different cultures – how has this influenced your writing?
Learning new languages has really been helping my writing. Different cultures have different ways of expressing feelings, forming sentences etc. This has been helping me approach writing, changing things like the order of a sentence etc.
What aspects of your life did you get to explore on this record?
Heartbreak, the feeling of giving up and then finding hope again!
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! I just finished 5 shows in Vancouver, I am on my way to Kyoto, Japan and then I will be visiting my charity in Central America and then back home to Toronto to prepare for our big theater show in November.
What else is happening next in Duane Forrest’s world?
Considering moving to Europe and launching this huge theater project called “the Climb”.
