Just Music’s imprint The Ambient Zone presents the latest in a succession of releases from the Robosonic man’s mysterious and progressive alter-ego – Cord Labuhn‘Unter Deck’, taken from Cord’s own ‘The Sleepout Mixtape’, explores the physical human journey and interpretation of sleep.

Listen here:

Labuhn explains that “the title ‘Unter Deck’ is German and a blend of ‘under sheets’ and the nautic ‘below decks’. I guess I made this tune rather like a blanket or a pillow to rest on, or a cosy cabin on a sail boat, round and warm, slow and peaceful. So happy it found its harbour with The Ambient Zone.”

The Ambient Zone recently spawned from the China Records boss John Benedict’s fiercely independent label Just Music, which was designed to build a home for ambient electronic artists, and in turn serves as a focused experimental outlet and a haven for such sounds and ‘space between time and place’.

To date, Cord’s longest running project Robosonic, was formed as a DJ-producer duo together with Sacha Robotti over 10 years ago. After their free-spirited debut LP ‘Sturm und Drang’ (2007) they took the world by storm with a string of popular tracks and remixes that went into the crates of tens of thousands of DJs worldwide and made it to top spots in the infamous Beatport charts, the duo became a figurehead for the internationally renowned “Golden Era House” (Juice Magazine).

Not content with releasing on his dance music moniker Robosonic, Cord and his creative genius are now evolving into a new chapter of musical forms. His new label and collaborative hub ‘OUTTAKES’ serves primarily as a studio-to-listeners feed – to pilot his own musical direction independent from A&R decisions and restrictive market forces. A conscious counterpart and soulful antidote to the dance music business with its particular formulas, the project has already found favour with XLR8R, and features contributions from the likes of EPMD.

Cord is a producers’ producer and this track is no exception. Smooth harmonies and soft progressions take this ambient piece into its own realm. His hi-end production values make full use of the stereo field with an array of sounds to envelope the soul, giving the listener a kick without the usual backbone of a ‘regular’ track.

The Ambient Zone welcomes ‘Unter Decks’ artful hybrids and organic blends which zone effortlessly between subversive underground culture, the high-heel house and hippie hoppie heave – paving the way for Cord to continue to ‘make waves’ within the increasingly popular experimental ambient community.
