Hi Mary, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi!! Thanks for having me! I have been pretty wonderful. Just living life and going with the flow. 🙂

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Without You”?

Of course!! I have been so eager for my fans to get to hear the new stuff I am working on and Without You is just the start. This is my first release since The Voice and it feels so good to let people hear what I’ve been up to since. This song is old school mixed with new and captures a positive look of break-ups.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

This song means a lot to me because of how it helped me through a tough time in my life. I had gone through a pretty tough break-up of 3 years and it happened at a terrible time. I had a lot going on with my career (BIG stuff) that took a lot of my focus and a break-up was not what I needed. But, it happened and I had to ask myself, do I allow myself to focus on the breakup or do I look forward and see all of the positive things happening outside of it? And, that’s the idea for without you. When my break-up happened, I spent a lot of month learning about myself again and taking time to find me! It was an incredibly positive experience and I hope Without You helps others to see it too.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

There are plans as of right now… nothing set in stone. But, we will see!

How was the recording and writing process?

So, crazy thing. The writing and the tracking of my vocals for the song happened in the same day! I co-wrote the song with Bart Butler, Mike Walker, and David Garcia. We had a really great session and things just flowed. These guys are amazing writers and producers so I wasn’t too worried about it. But, the reason we kept the vocals from the writing session was because when you just write a song, all of your emotions about it come out. And, it did. So, we decided to not go back and re-track the vocals. Which I think is pretty cool!

Many readers might recognize you for this popular TV show The Voice – what did you learn from that experience that you putting in action on your career now?

I think the biggest thing I learned from the show was to really trust myself as an artist. I mean, when I was at The Voice, we had to constantly take songs that weren’t ours and somehow make it our own without changing it too much. It was a real challenge and a lot of times I second guessed myself but the fact was, I had to choose at the end of the day what was best. And, that in itself, was very empowering.

What role does Oklahoma plays in your writing?

Well, I was born in Tulsa but my parents moved us to Texas about 7 months after I was born. So, I don’t have really any memory (Sadly) about it. I definitely consider Texas as more of home base for me since it is where I grew up! But, I will always love Oklahoma!

Does this new single eventually lead to a new album? If so, how’s that coming along?

I hope so. Right now, I am more or less planning to keep releasing singles as I continue to learn about myself as an artist. I want my fans to grow with me. Albums can take quite a while to put together and I don’t want my fans to have to wait because I am always working on my craft. I will, of course, put an album out in the future but right now I am just sticking to singles!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Like I said, sticking to singles right now. I am really excited for the day I do get to release an album but when I do, I want to know that I took my time and really threw myself into it.

You’re mostly known for your Country music but “Without You” has this new other musical layers – would you be playing with other styles?

Always!! I am inspired by country but also by a many of genres! I grew up listening to Christian, Pop. Rock, you name it. So, it’s definitely not out of the question. I guess it just depends on where life takes me.

Any plans to hit the road?

Well, I hope so! Performing is what I love to do. Right now I do have shows so it’s not necessarily touring but I do keep busy. I am definitely trying to make sure I balance the performing with the writing. But, yes I hope to do more shows and maybe even get on a tour for 2018/1019.

What else is happening next in Mary Sarah’s world?

Well, right now it’s just writing and performing. Which I am loving. And, also making sure I don’t forget to experience life and having a social life. With wiring, you’ve got to be inspired and that comes from living! I do have a lot more that I wish I could share with you right now, but I can’t just yet! It’s all pretty exciting and I can’t wait for people to know.
