Hi Tom, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Thanks for having me. Pretty great really.
For those who aren’t familiar with you or your sound yet, how would you describe it?
Alternative-pop folk seems simplest. I layer vocal harmony and rhythms but there is a lyrical focus.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Beside You”?
How did the single name come about?
It’s the main lyric and I just wanted to keep things simple as it’s a direct song.
Did any event/s in particular inspire you to write the material?
No single event. It was inspired by various moments of simple intimacy and also distraction that I noticed in my own interactions with people. It’s that tendency to carry the influences of the day around with us that I was most interested in – how they can over complicate the way people communicate with each other. The song aims to hold to light and celebrate the purest intentions I’ve experienced for people I care about.
How was the recording and writing process?
Most of the lyrics and melodies came about pretty quickly. I liked the momentum in the chorus melody’s rhythmic phrasing and that became a strong motif for the song. Working with the producer Countbounce was fun with us both bouncing ideas off each other as we layered different types of percussion.
How different is this new single from your previous material?
Beside You’s definitely a more straight forward structure than a lot of my stuff. It has a more immediate and continuous beat to it than my last single.
How is it being over in the UK on Tour?
It’s exciting meeting lots of people and learning about different places in the UK. I love the cultural diversity in the big cities and the bands I’ve seen. Cheap beer also a plus.
Why should people pay attention to you?
That’s up to them. I love connecting with new people and finding out what drew them to my songs.
What’s special about you?
People find their own reasons to connect to my lyrics or the textures in my music and that’s awesome.
What else is happening next in Tom Lee-Richard’s world?
I have a Mini-LP on the horizon which will be my first full release for this project. My favourite single is to come which is a little more left field but it’s fast evolving journey gets me pumped.
