Thanks for having us – we just wrapped up a cello session for one of our new tunes & feeling pretty good about the way things are sounding.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Tightrope”?
Tightrope started as a simple little ditty written on the kitchen floor in Boston. When we moved to California, it made sense to create a sunny video to reflect the move. It’s bright and happy and screams a retro – beach pop vibe.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not really – the idea began with the first line of the chorus “and now we’re walking on a tightrope…”and it stayed that way for about two weeks until we eventually ran with the metaphor and wrote the rest of the song about the nervous-excitement of a new relationship.
How was the film experience behind the video?
For this video, we just had to be ourselves. It was by far, the easiest music video we’ve ever made – I mean, who doesn’t like cartwheels, cannonballs & squirt guns?!
How was the recording and writing process?
Like most of our EP, we recorded most of it ourselves in a toy closet, tucked away in an old beach house in Massachusetts. Our writing process has a lot of variability. Songs come in all shapes and sizes, but the process always becomes collaborative.
As the band changed its name – how has this influenced the band’s sound?
Funny enough, it was the other way around – we felt like the band’s sound had changed to the point where we needed to change the name. The sound became more centered around our duets.
How has LA influenced your writing and does Boston still play any role in your music?
In general, traveling anywhere influences our writing – its more about life experiences than it is being in a particular location. For example, because we flew down to Amarillo, TX for a gig and walked into a local bar for a whiskey, “The Spotted Pony,” we’re able to and use that experience as inspiration for songs down the road.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
We’re in the middle of recording tons of new material. At the moment, nothing is ready for release, but we’re getting excited for everyone to hear it!
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
It’s too soon to tell & the songs keep coming – we’ll let you know when we have a better idea.
Any plans to hit the road?
We’ll be in the Midwest the beginning of August & then its back to LA for the fall.
What else is happening next in Peridot’s world?
There’s a lot up in the air, at the moment & it feels like we’re in hibernation – we’re just focusing on getting the next batch of songs ready & then we’ll go from there.
