INTERVIEW: Marina Avetisian

Hi Marina, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi, I’m very good, thank you, very excited to talk to you.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Shivers”?

I’d like to think Shivers is an uplifting song, that inspires romance in all its expressions. But it also has another layer,  it’s about sense of freedom, connections with the soul, connection with everything around us: nature, people, life. I also really wanted to create something with the light summer feel, warm and sunny so people can travel with the song.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

It started with one line someone said to me and a beautiful feeling around it. But then it evolved into something that has a deeper meaning for me. Love is so multidimensional.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

I would like to do a live session video with it. Add new elements. It’s fun to do.

The single comes off your new album All Shades of Blue – what’s the story behind the title?

It’s inspired by nature and sea a lot and the meaning behind the water element. Water element represents so many things for me: flow, heart matters, mysteries, complexity and depths of emotions, creativity, inspiration, constant movements and stillness at the same time, healing, travel, love.

How was the recording and writing process?

The recording process was very special; many hours, many fun moments, many jokes, many new ideas, many coffees.

I was very lucky to meet Brando Walker and Nathan Britton and to work with them and record at amazing EC 1 studio. They really helped me to create the sound I wanted and they are incredible musicians and propel. We also had Andrea Callarelli who played guitar on all the tracks. Me and Andrea have been playing together for many years so we really feel each other which is very special. And we had Yelfris Valdés on trumpet in Campervan  Blues, he is such a great trumpet player. I felt very blessed to work with all of them.

About the writing process, well, I found that the songwriting is always different. Sometimes songs just comes like it was always there waiting till I catch it, sometimes it’s a sensation, feeling or a moment that become a song, sometimes i just jam and some nice melody and lyrics come, sometimes I process some thoughts or story through the song. For All shades of Blue I wanted to have a particular message and mood. Three main themes: love, freedom and connection.

How has Feist and Norah Jones influence your writing?

I love both of them. I went to see Norah Jones few weeks ago in Sometset house and it was stunning. Some years ago my friend Elena gave me a birthday present and it was Feist album. Since then Feist is one of my favourite artists, she is so authentic and I love her sound, lyrics and mood.

What role does Russia plays in your music?

I grew up there so it will always have a special place in my heart, especially for people! I had my first music teachers and experiences there. Growing up I was exposed to different cultures, my dad is Armenian and mum is Ukranian. I think diversity definitely influenced my music. We used different instruments from around the world to record All shades of Blue. For example we have Armenian duduk recorded for Take Some Tome song.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

Nature and my heartbeat. People and connections with them. Sense of love and freedom. Stories. Sea. Movements of emotions.

Any plans to hit the road?

I’m am packing to go to Greece. So will be playing in Crete. Will have London gigs set for the end of August and September.

What else is happening next in Marina Avetisian’s world?

I’m releasing the Ep on the 28th of July which I’m very excited about and then for the near future the plan is to go back to the studio and work on some new material along with connecting with as many people as I can through my music and some live gigs.
