INTERVIEW: Johnson Crook

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

TREVOR: Hi! Thanks for having us. We’ve been great! Been out on the road playing a lot of shows, which is always fun.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hardwired”?

NATHAN: We’re all pretty in love with this song, it’s a blast to play and it’s one of our favourites.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

NOEL: No particular event per se. It was a culmination of reflecting on breakups past and wanting to express that “lost” feeling you get the days or weeks after, when you don’t know how to move on when that person was part of your life for so long. The word “Hardwired” expressed that for me and the rest of the song grew from that.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

JARED: Yes, we have a live performance video, recorded in one of our favourite venues, The Dakota Tavern in Toronto that we’ll be sharing soon.

The single comes off your new album The Album – what’s the story behind the title? Why did you come up with what reads as a generic title?

NOEL: We’ve been working on this project for the last few years and just kept referring to it as “the album”. After that, the name just stuck.

How was the recording and writing process?

JARED: In one word, collaborative. We all sing, play, and write. Some songs are developed together from an idea someone brings in and others come more fully formed but still get some input from the rest of the band that makes it a Johnson Crook song.

What was it like to work with Bill Bell and how did that relationship develop?

TREVOR: Recording with Bill was amazing! During the recording, he was really the fifth member of the band. We first met him during one of our gigs at  Castro’s Lounge in Toronto. It was during a snowstorm and besides the staff, he was the only person in attendance. We’ve been friends ever since.

How much did he influence the album?

NOEL: He really wanted us to stay true to ourselves and our music, but in doing so he worked with us to create a stronger sound and performance that we have kept ever since. Bill also helped us to ensure the recording reflected the energy of our live performance, which was very important to us.

What role does Toronto play in your writing?

JARED: Being in Toronto is definitely inspiring. There are a lot of great songwriters, musicians, and bands here. Being able to go to a show pretty much any night to see such incredible talent drives us to keep writing and playing and getting better.

What aspect of love and self-discovery did you get to explore on this record?

NOEL: Songs on this record definitely lean towards themes of love and heartbreak culled from examining past relationships and the effect they’ve had. You’ll also find themes of wanderlust from “Minnedosa” about growing up in a small town and having big dreams to “Canada To Heartbreak”, which was inspired by a cross-Canada train journey.

Any plans to hit the road?

TREVOR: Always! Check johnsoncrook.com for the most up to date listings and let us know your suggestions for great places to play near you!

What else is happening next in Johnson Crook’s world?

NATHAN: Besides a lot of touring, we’re really excited to share The Album with everyone! It’ll be available online and at shows starting August 4th. Besides that, follow us on your favourite social media platform to see what we’re up to.
