Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Learn To Be”?
I recorded it in a Hollywood studio overlooking Hollywood Blvd. with producer Jon Levine (who worked wit Rachel Platten and Andy Grammer) I showed him the song last minute as we were recording other songs that were pre-determined.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
During a really caustic relationship when I wrote the song it was me explaining that ive had enough of lying to myself and making excuses for us to stay together. Realizing the optional was there for me to relapse into going back with her I mapped out all the things id need to learn to do alone.. Like eat, sleep, talk and walk .. Really just learn to be by myself and overcome the addiction to this shit relationship..
What made you want to shoot the video in Buenos Aires, and how does the video narrative tie into the song?
While in Hollywood recording other tracks, we also were filming a video for another song and a photographer which I had past shoots with by the name of Caro Patlis who I absolutely love her work I must mention was flown in from Argentina to shoot collateral photos .. While at dinner with her after the shoot, we talked about possibly shooting another video with her so when the song Learn to Be was done, we emailed it to her and worked on a story line. She suggested shooting it in her home town in Argentina – she knew great actors to work with. Her ideas came to life rather brilliantly.
How was the recording and writing process?
The writing process was very organic, done at a piano low key. The recording process was Jon Levine all the way. It came to him as a stripped down version on piano and a really rough recording done on a noisy laptop so I was surprised he saw the shine in it!
After the success from your previous releases were you any nervous while working on this newest single?
There’s always reservation about starting a new project with a new producer and going in a different direction. Sometimes it can be the most unnerving thing for a writer and artist to do. Not knowing what to expect I always a pain in the ass for anybody in any occupation. But there’s definitely a sense of excitement as well and a bit of a rush.
Does your new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Yes. We have many tracks we’ve recorded, waiting to be released as singles and to be included on an album ultimately.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I was told by the label to keep close wraps on both of these, however when we get close I will tell you first 🙂
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes, we are currently doing shows in the US with David Bromberg, an icon who has worked with everyone from Bob Dylan to the Eagles. And in the fall, with Ron Pope in Europe. Go to brianmackeymusic.com for tour dates.
What else is happening next in Brian Mackey’s world?
Well right now we are gearing up for the European tour, and putting finishing touches on tours and videos that we are waiting to release. So we have some pretty cool stuff coming up, stuff that we are very enthusiastic about! Thanks so much Vents – I believe this is our 2nd interview. 🙂
