INTERVIEW: Yasmin Kadi

Hi Yasmin, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi all at Vents! I’ve been good thanks – and very busy.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “No Drama”?

The new single ‘No Drama’ is about a significant other who you adore, but their jealousy is causing a lot of issues in the relationship. It gets to a point where you have to say no more, I’m not interested in your drama, just go home to your Mama.  I’m sure a lot of us can relate to this at one point or another.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

No, not any one event in particular. I find inspiration from life experiences and conversations with people.‘No Drama came from issues some of my friends were going through, both male and female. Also from one of my own past relationships where a partner was so jealous, he’d get annoyed at me for having on stage kissing scenes (written in the script) on a show I was touring with at the time.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Yes, that will be coming out with the release of the single on the 18th of August.

How was the recording and writing process?

The track was produced by SOS who have worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Emily Sande, Stormzy, Wretch 32 etc…. So It was very exciting. Lovely guys! We got along really well and we just had so much fun creating great feel good music. They listened to where I was coming from and what I wanted and they were very open. I wrote the song (lyrics and topline melody) in 20 minutes. When you have a great production that speaks to you, the writing just flows.

What was it like to work with SOS and how did that relationship develop?

Working with SOS was literally like working with my brothers. Sometimes, it felt like we were just hanging out and having fun. We worked hard and enjoyed making music.

How much did he influence the album?

They ended up producing several tracks for me, and they all made the final cut on my album, so they influenced it heavily.

What role does Sierra Leone play in your music?

Sierra Leone is the heartbeat of my music. I was born there and I grew up there. My appreciation for the small things in life, my outlook and mentality towards most things in life has been shaped because of my up bringing in Sierra Leone. So I guess it all leads back to my roots in Sierra Leone.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Yes there is an album to follow after the release of 2 singles. The album is out in September/October and it’s also titled “NO Drama”.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

What aspect of relationships would you be exploring on this material?

My album is split in two sections. Half is called ‘For The Feet’ and the other half ‘For The Heart’. For the feet is full of up tempo feel good, uplifting and positive vibes that you can’t help but dance to and hum to. For the heart is exactly what it says on the tin. It deals with emotional matters of the heart, like love, loss and pain.

Any plans to hit the road?

All focus is on finishing the album and upcoming live performances, the next being on the 5th of August 2017 at AFC Wimbledon football club, supporting Latin Grammy Winner Rafael Brito – which I’m very excited and honored to be doing.

What else is happening next in Yasmin Kadi’s world?

Ive not long shot a commercial for the ‘Next Generation’ collaboration between Jaguar and Gorillaz the band. Alongside my new single ‘No Drama’, I’m also working on a charity single – collaborating with various Sierra Leonean artists and speaking up against knife crime. Then I’m releasing my 2nd single, which would be followed by the release of my Album in September/October, also titled “No Drama” – and continue on the live circuit. Believe it or not, I am already writing songs for my second album. Creating never stops form me and I’m very grateful for that.
