Rude Grl is a new collaboration between Jenna Dickens and Ben Langmaid (ex-La Roux). The duo, which draws influences from early 80s and 90s electro hip-hop, and post-punk, have revealed today the video for debut single ‘That’s the Way it is (Survival of the Sickest)’, the first release on Rat Boy’s new label, SCUM.
At the age of 24, Jenna has never stood still in proving her credentials as a singer, songwriter and MC. In her former incarnation of JLD, she collaborated with the likes of Wiley, Bless Beats and Roll Deep. As part of the band ‘The Binary Kids’, she toured with Lady Sovereign supporting N-Dubz and working with Basement Jaxx. She even came close to winning BBC 1Xtra’s ‘Battle of the Nation’ rap battle…at the age of 12!
The result of a turbulent upbringing, Jenna was born and raised in South Wales by a single mother struggling with mental illness. When she was 18 she signed to Mercury Records but was dropped without ever releasing any music. She was snapped up as a model by Elite Models, but around this time she suffered a personal tragedy and began struggling to find her way through the baggage of the past, while her alcoholism raged. She explored her post-punk influences during this time, releasing a few songs and featuring on Sub Focus’ debut album.
In 2015, Jenna met Ben Langmaid, whom she credits with not only helping develop her as an artist, but also help her get clean and sober.
Jenna Dickens said: “I’m so excited to get this music out there! I hope it causes some mayhem. Ben is like a big brother to me, he’s really been there for me personally, as well as in music. That’s what has made the music so special. We were allowed a space to put everything into it: the raw and the real…no holding back!”
Ben Langmaid said: “Jenna and I clicked immediately, as soon as we met. When it comes to her rhymes and flows, combined with the journey she’s been through, she’s a musical force to be reckoned with. She is the real deal, and a true star, so I was excited to work with her and I’m really proud of the music we’ve created!”
‘That’s The Way it is’ is the first of many new tracks to come out of the studio of this exciting collaboration. The track samples Run DMC’s seminal ‘It’s Like That’ and yet sounds completely fresh and unique in a landscape awash with playlist-friendly identikit pop.
Rat Boy said: “I’m excited to announce my own label SCUM RECS. I’ll be working with and releasing new artists that I’m excited about. Rude Grl is our first release. Jenna has had a tough upbringing and she channels it into witty playful bars over 80’s styled beats. I’ll be welcoming loads of different styles and sounds to SCUM RECS from everywhere around the world”
