INTERVIEW: Up Down Go Machine

Can you talk to us more about your song “Gambler”?

It took us a bit of reworking and adapting to get to this version of the gambler. It has always been our go to the closing song at gigs and always got the crowd going- but we couldn’t get it to record well. With that in mind, we changed things around a bit, made it a bit darker and finally came up with something we were all happy with.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Our singer Stephen started working on this track after watching the film casino. Took the lyrics in a way that focuses on one individual and his journey of obsession and his debt to the wrong people. It doesn’t end well for him, let’s just say that.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Definitely! We will be looking to get something that reflects the mood of the song! Those dark undertones.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

This question is relevant just yet as we will haven’t done an album

How was the recording and writing process?

The whole process was brilliant! Headed down the Pembrokeshire coastline in Wales for a week and locked ourselves in the studio. We tried lots of different percussive elements, analog synths and a bunch of different drum sounds.

How has gangster movies influences your writing?

It’s not necessary the gangster genre as a whole, it’s more the individual stories of characters that can be interesting. With the violence and obsessive nature of the characters in this kind of genre, it’s quite easy to bring out the darker aspects in the lyrics.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

We have songs about a damn bursting back In the 1700’s,  another based on a mermaid that falls in love with a man- and one of the tracks is focused around one of Louis Theroux documentaries about alcoholism- taking one person’s stories and perspective of his/her world. Sometimes it can come from a word or a poem, or a story I have heard.

Any plans to hit the road?

We’re aiming to hit the road very soon for some intimate Sofar Sounds shows as well as some festivals so all very exciting!

What else is happening next in Up Down Go Machine’s world?

Gigs gigs and more gigs with a few festivals thrown in for good measure. Then very likely studio time again.
