INTERVIEW: Black Cat Bones

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you! Good thanks, busy! But busy is good.

Can you talk to us more about your new single “The River”?

‘The River’ was a happy accident really, and it nearly didn’t make it on the record. Just before our final sessions, we went in to record and Rimmer mentioned jamming it (we’d written it about a year beforehand, before Adam and Jamie joined us). When we started playing through it and everyone was buzzing about it, we worked on the arrangement and decided to record it. I love playing it live when the audience gets involved.

Any plans to release a video?

I’ve got a whole idea set out in my head for Devil You know, but it’s a higher budget than we have, I need a court room and about 100 extras in full Victorian dress for that! I think we’ll have some form of video soon, it’s on the list of things to do.

How was the recording and writing process for the EP?

I love recording, I get to play around with the vocal sounds and layering stuff, then we’ve got to try to recreate that live! The boys are very efficient getting in and laying the tracks down, and in ten to like getting things in a couple of takes, I don’t like doing things a million times, it really loses its soul. Writing happened over about a year I think, on and off, Seen Better was pretty quick when the lads played me the track, Lust had been knocking around for ages, but it was just that riff. Give You The World was a tough nut to crack, Rimmer came to me with lyric ideas, which he doesn’t usually do. Took me a while to mould that into something that in could get passionate and sing about, plus Dennis Skinner is on the track. Devil You Know was something kebab brought, and River was never going to be on the record at all.

Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?

The lyrics really for me are just an extension of what’s going on in my head at the time. World is a really angry song, basically a rant about the state of the current government. Lust is a sex song, everyone has that feeling, don’t They? LUST haha. Translating that into words wasn’t as easy as I thought though…. I took a lot from the blues for that one.

Any plans to hit the road?

We are a few days into our “Chaos Continued Tour”, I guess when this goes out we’ll have done. We’re playing a bunch of festivals in August and we’re talking about hitting the road in October.

What else is happening next in Black Cat Bones’ world?

Looking forward to the release, we’re recording demos at the moment, we’re ready to make our first album, so trying to get the ball rolling with that.
