Canadian indie-folk singer-songwriter LeRiche reveals the powerful visuals for his latest single ‘Under Covers’, recently released on indie stalwart Big Story Entertainment. Watch here
Directed by Nowness-collaborator, French writer and director Charlotte Rabate, the compelling video breaks away from the classical portrayal of a happy relationship. Taking the extreme flip side of the song – which is about two people at an emotional crossroad – and imagining the girl plotting her boyfriend’s death in an absurd way.
Filmed in New York, the short movie is loosely inspired by the work of cult photographer Guy Bourdin. “I always admired the way he could make an inanimate object the central character of his images”, explains Charlotte Rebate, “I like to twist how we see objects from our everyday life to bring a surrealist quality to a scene.” Talking about the video, LeRiche himself said: “I thought it was ironic that Charlotte found a way to portray the end of a relationship to a death brought on by an allergy to peanuts”
Hailing from Port aux Basques, a scenic town with a population of less than 5,000 people in Newfoundland, LeRiche’s passion for music stemmed from an early age, stretching his fingers out on a six-string at the eye-opening age of one, and later learning his craft in the darkened bars at the far end of Canada. If all this might suggest a profoundly solitary troubadour with an acoustic guitar, the reality couldn’t be far, as LeRiche’s musical journey includes a diploma from the College of the North Atlantic in Music Industry and Performance, which exposed him to all aspects of the music industry.
‘Under Covers’ is the first offering from LeRiche upcoming EP ‘X-Dreamer’, and follows up on last year’s ‘Quiet Steady’ EP. With influences spanning from Fleet Foxes’ rolling melodies to Local Natives emotionally cathartic choruses, the new single is a first look at his upcoming EP, due for release on Big Story Entertainment later this year and which consists of seven breezily heartfelt cuts that exemplify LeRiche’s heartwarming approach to music: one that is sure to resonate with listeners on its release
Having recently notched up memorable live performances in the UK including a show at this year’s Great Escape Festival in Brighton, LeRiche is set to make his mark on the international music scene.
