I’m well! Staying positive as always! I’ve been working on a million projects from ads to tv shows on investigation discovery. I’m back to narrowing my focus to music now.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Lost Mind”?
It’s the newest single featuring Eric Haywood and produced by ski beatz. In the song, I talk about different things my team and I have been through and how we get through it…that’s why the end of the sounds brighter…just to say “hey…it’s going to be ok”
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I was sitting down with my business partners Wes, D Smith and Eric…and we just started talking about how social media had effected a lot of people we knew…some for the better…a lot for the worse. I started questioning…does social media reward whining? Why do I read this person’s statuses when they are negative every day?… Why do i feel like I have to follow someone who i haven’t seen in 10 years…that is nothing but a dark cloud? I was losing my mind
The single comes off your new album World’s Fault – what’s the story behind the title?
There was a producer I was working with a few years back and he had a track titled Worlds Fault… we never finished it..but the title created a lot of debate in our circle… do I do things a certain way because of my environment… or am I just blaming my surroundings when I should be a better judge… either way… it’s the World’s Fault that I have this temperament
How was the recording and writing process?
Incredible… everyone came to my home in Virginia for 4 days. We created over 20 songs… had great conversations and were pretty tough on each other. It was like a workshop where everyone tried to get the best out of everyone else.
What was it like to work with Ski Beatz and how did that relationship develop?
I’ve known Ski for years now… its more of a friendship ..but it’s also cool having someone in your corner that has worked with the best… it makes me sharper… and he demands the best.
How much did he influence the album?
A lot… he and Eric haywood both. We watched a lot of movies from the 70s on mute… Foxy Brown , Shaft , Black Caesar , Taxi Driver. We wanted to musically capture the common struggle
What aspect of life struggles and success did you get to explore on this record?
I just became a new dad…and I talk about it through the album. It’s not a struggle..but as soon as she was born.. I felt something click…like…ok…here is this new baby girl that I will take care of by any means necessary.
I also talk about previous jobs… jobs Eric has worked…Wes & D’s stories. It’s a culmination of things that has moved us all emotionally at some point
Any plans to hit the road?
Yes! We are going to be recording a live set soon because I want people to see us and how we come across visually…just to see the difference.
What else is happening next in Trew’s world?
I have my own indie label now Clocked Out Records and we are working with other artist and music placements as well!
Thanks Vents! for taking the time to interview me! Hope all is well and I wish you much continued sucess!
