INTERVIEW: Anthony Touma

Hi Anthony, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hello! Very happy to be talking to VENTS, I’ve been great! Hope you feel the same 🙂

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Walk Away”?

I’m very proud of that single, it makes me genuinely happy when I listen to it. Walk Away is full of life and rhythm, it is all about staying positive and pushing negative people away. I truly believe the energy of the people and things we are surrounded with directly affect us, our mood, our productivity and our state of mind and heart.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wouldn’t say I was inspired by one particular event, rather by experiences I lived when people started noticing my success. Classmates that I had never been friends with started writing me about how I’ve changed, people who didn’t initially believe in me suddenly showed interest in my work, exes that had given up on our relationship suddenly came back with justifications etc…

I felt people would relate to this subject, we all have these negative people around us dragging us down and we owe it to ourselves to protect ourselves from them and move forward.

Any plans to release a video for the single? Can you talk to us more about it and the concept?

We are releasing the music video next week and I’m extremely excited for it! The concept is simple, it will leave you smiling and feeling positive from beginning to end.. with a catch of course.

How was the recording and writing process?

I first came up with the chords progression and the words “Walk Away” in rhythm. I could already hear the mood in my head and knew what I wanted to talk about. I recorded it on my piano and sent it to Tarek and Sleiman who produced the track. They loved the idea and I got to work, writing the rest of the melody and the lyrics. We decided to start with a bass-line and take it from there.. I’ve never had this much fun recording a song before, the african theme reminded me of Lion King, my favorite childhood movie, we had to repeat the vocal takes many times because I couldn’t stop myself from dancing and you could hear noises on the takes!

How has Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder influence your music?

It’s safe to say that growing up, Michael Jackson left an important mark not only on my music but on my perception of an artist. His songs are filled with positive messages and beautiful melodies, his energy on stage is contagious, his vocal performance is unique, his attention to detail was incredible and all these aspects inspired me and helped forge the artist that I am today and most importantly the artist that I aim to be. Not to mention that having a relatively high pitched voice for a man, Michael Jackson’s songs were the few songs I could sing in karaoke nights without having to change the key! As for Stevie Wonder, I would spend hours learning how to play his songs on the piano, Stevie wonder is a musical genius and being a pianist, I learned a lot from playing his chord progressions and voicings and listening to him groove through some of the most beautiful songs every written. (I’m sure all musicians can relate)

How does your acting influence your music and the other way around?

I don’t really have much acting experience, I had the opportunity to act in a Local Lebanese movie so I took extensive acting courses prior to the shooting and had a good time acting in it. I’d like to eventually take acting more seriously, but for the time being, i’m more focused on music. That being said, acting makes you much more aware of your body, the way you stand and talk etc.. I noticed that I became more aware of these things during my concert performances following the movie.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

The production of the album is in progress, the writing process is actually complete, I’ll be recording the rest of the album during the coming months!

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Not yet for the release date, and too many ideas for the title that I need to narrow down to one!

Any plans to hit the road?

Not before the album is out, but definitely looking forward to hitting the road once the music is released! Will hopefully see you at one of these dates 🙂

What else is happening next in Anthony Touma’s world?

We are already looking into the next single and the concept of the music video. I’m also preparing for a couple of performances and TV appearances during summer. Aside from music, it’s the gym, friends, and some alone netflix time when needed!
