Good, busy. Just wrapped up a month-long residency in New York and an East Coast tour promoting my single “Tell Me.” The music video for the song premiered on Billboard in June; you can watch it here.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Tell Me”?
It’s a love song; or rather, it uses the conceit of a pop love song to explore deeper themes, like identity, betrayal, and belonging.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It’s hard for me to trace inspiration to anything specific, but I was certainly influenced by a constellation of events that were pressing on me during that time.
How was the film experience?
I worked with a really talented team, including my co-producer Katherine Wilkinson, director of photography Matt Infante, and a number of excellent actors from Austin and thereabouts. We had a clear vision going in and we were all really happy with how it turned out.
With the success from your previous singles – were there any pressure while working on this one?
I wrote this song, as well as my other singles from Some Other Country, Swoon and Solo, around the same time, before any of them had been released to the public. So while I believed in all of them, I couldn’t know for sure how they would be received. I’m pleased that audiences seem to have connected with them.
How was the recording and writing process?
Intense, solitary. Writing for me is a mysterious, elusive process, one that pays off when I’m able to figure out how to capture with instruments the sounds and melodies I hear in my head. It doesn’t always happen, but when it does, there’s no feeling like it.
Does this series of new singles mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?
I’m working on new material now, an album and multimedia project called POST-. No release date yet, but fans can sign up on my mailing list at mobleywho.com and I’ll let them know as soon as there is news.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’ll be on the road almost nonstop late summer and fall. I’ve got some shows coming up in Austin in July and August, followed by a brief tour around the South, East, and Midwest in early September. Then I’m touring in France and Germany in mid-September with Project ATX6, followed by UTOPiAFest in Texas at the end of the month. After that, I’m playing ACL in October before heading to Oita, Japan and then Montreal with ATX6.
What else is happening next in Mobley’s world?
Lots of new music and live shows to come. Keep up-to-date via mobleywho.com, or follow me on social media @mobleywho.
