INTERVIEW: All Tied Up
Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Dudes! – all good in the hood thanks!
Can you talk to us more about your song “So Enthusiastic”?
Absolutely! – it’s a track we are absolutely stoked about! To give you more of a ‘feel’ – it’s a song based around the concept of coming to a realisation that you should be happy with yourself without feeling the need to transform into somebody else (as we’re pretty sure EVERYBODY has contemplated in one way or another at some point in life) in order to impress somebody. As soon as we had finished recording it, it became obvious to us that THIS was going to be the lead single – it’s upbeat, meaningful and hopefully something everybody can relate to!… We we lucky enough to snag Joe Laporta (David Bowie/Foo Fighters/ Mallory knox amongst others) on mastering duties… to think that a 4 piece pop punk band from Milton Keynes managed to secure a Grammy award winning sound engineer on their record blows our mind! – It’s dropping on 18th Aug via stack-in-a-box records!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not a specific event in honesty, just the realisation that I am who I am/ we are who we are and I tried to tell a story to project that message across.
Any plans to release a video for the track?
Definitely! – we didn’t have a massive budget, much the same as bands at the same level as us, and although blessed with having a label backing us, the majority of budget was taken up with the recording process. Leebo had been collecting various video clips throughout the recording process for memories sake and we thought that it would be pretty rad to have a home shot montage video of various bits and bobs – like, 90% of the video was shot on his Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone and edited together by our friend Wheeler who is incredibly gifted!
How was the recording and writing process?
A real hotpot of excitement, stress, deadline overrunning, frustration and passion! – This has been the longest time we have ever spent recording a record and working alongside a producer (Andy Davis – also owner of our label). We went in pretty much not knowing what to expect as prior recordings and production had all been done by ourselves. There were hugs, arguments, fights and the odd temper tantrum at times – we are 4 very different and strong personalities – but overall, we are thrilled at the end result. We were really pushed to the limit at times, but we think that’s what makes the record pop…. you can feel different vibes on each of the tracks which is kinda neat!
How has Green Day and All Time Low influence your music?
That’s a real tough question to answer! – it’s freaking GREEN DAY and ALL TIME LOW! – two pioneers of our genre! How can they not have!? – We think certainly from a structuring point and the way those guys arrange their songs and parts has definitely guided us along the path to working the way we do…. both bands are masters of the killer ‘hook’ in their songs which is something we certainly want to replicate…. We all have a very wide variety of inspirations ‘away’ from the pop punk scene which we also try to incorporate into our overall sound.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
Dave writes a lot of his lyrics based from personal experiences throughout his life and also tends to question himself as to how he would think/do/react in certain random situations – so the majority of tracks on the new record pretty much stem from that. Occasionally the rest of us will chip in and re-work a section here and there and bounce ideas around, but Dave is the most articulate with words so we tend to let him handle that side of things!
Any plans to hit the road?
Absolutely! – we have a couple dates so far around release tie and are working on scheduling in a good few more around that time and for the rest of the year. Being without a booking agent is challenging… there’s an awful lot of competition out there and only so many slots to fill, but absolutely keep checking out our socials for updates!
What else is happening next in All Tied Up’s world?
Right now, it’s all about the promotion and press for the record, in the space between ‘real life’ (day jobs… for now!!) and that – we are always writing new material and gearing up for pre-production on even more tracks!
Hi Leyton, welcome to VENTS! How have you been? I am very well thank you! …
