Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Hoping and Waiting”?
-Hoping & Waiting is the second single myself and G Postorino wrote together. It’s a song we both felt very attached to as we have both seen what effects drug and alcohol addiction has on family and friends. The struggle of knowing when you’ve done all you can to help someone and when its time to let go. Its very painful to realize you cant help someone who is suffering from a disease like addiction, especially when they don’t the help.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
-Truthfully the hook was born before the concept. We were recording another song and the line “hoping and waiting” was a part I wrote for the background vocals. Giordan noticed the catchiness of it right away, and we recorded it as a hook for a new song that same day. We discussed what the concept would be and then he cam up with idea of hoping and waiting for a loved one to kick a bad habbit. I have personal seen what alcohol addiction can do do to a family so it wasn’t hard to write from that perspective. Shortly around that time I had also read an article written by a girl I went to highschool with who discussed her struggle with drugs. She talked about being so desperate that she would steel from her own parents to pay for drugs. Her family began to trust her less and less and after multiple attempts to get her rehabilitated they had to make the decision to step away from their daughter with hopes that she would eventually get clean. Her story was definitely a contributing factor to the writing of this song.
Any plans to release a video for the single? We are in the process as we speak of ironing out a shoot date for the video. So yes, stay tuned.
How was the recording and writing process?
– Its different every time to be honest. Sometimes I come to a session with a song I wrote on just piano, or something I really horrible produced on my laptop, and we build from there. Or, Giordan may have a track all done that just needs to be written to. Theres no real process that I follow.
What role does Toronto plays in your writing?
-Toronto is becoming more and more known as a music city. The talent here is unreal. The artistry is world class. Toronto has everything to do with my music. I have had the opportunity to play in bands with some of the best musicians, and in turn I’ve grown as a singer, musician, and writer. I wanna take more risks because of the caliber of musician I wanna be one day. I’m forever learning and growing thanks to this city.
How would you say you have evolved as an artist since your previous single?
-The first single wasn’t really a song I wanted to relaese as a single. But a director by the name of Walu got wind of it and wanted to shoot a video for it. So we ended up releasing it. Hoping & Waiting had a lot more thought put into it in terms of what we wanted to do with the song. The ideas are still growing as well. I feel like I’ve really found my sound in Hoping & Waiting.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
-You can definitely expect an album. Don’t ask me for a date yet but keep an eye out. Lol
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
-We are really just thinking of what the next single is going to be, to be completely hoenst. Haven’t gotten to album titles yet.
What other life struggles would you be diving into on this new record?
-I’ve struggled a lot with heart break. Most of it self inflicted. I guess a lot of the tunes with the exception of a few really tackle the idea that sometimes I stand my own way. Music is like my therapist, I always learn more about myself while writing.
Any plans to hit the road?
– Id’ love to hit the road. Playing live shows is my favourite thing. Being on stage is where I feel most at home. So yes the plans are in the works.
What else is happening next in Vaness Alegacy’s world?
– Hopefully a follow up single and some shows. I’m ready to share my world with everyone!
