Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Our Eyes”?
“Our Eyes” is the debut single off our 5 tracks EP that’s about to be released very soon, it was written about wanting more out of life, while both your environment and your own demons are holding you back, it’s kind of a fight song for me.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
It wasn’t one event in particular, it was just a period of time in my life when every day was exactly the same as the one before, I felt so depressed and held back, I kept thinking over and over of where I wanted to be in life and how far I was from that.I wanted to sing and to make music and just do what I love the most, but due to circumstances everything was pretty much paused, so I felt very stuck.
The video for the song takes place in the mountain filled with beautiful landscapes -was that done for aesthetics only or is there a deeper meaning/contrast?
When we decided to film in the Ukraine we knew it would bring aesthetics that are very unique, beautiful views, animals, as well as wonderful local people, but it also served the deeper concept of the video which is about a girl who doesn’t feel like she belongs in the village; she’s not happy where she is and therefor she seems numb to her surroundings and doesn’t fit in.
How was the film experience?
It was crazy! Definitely a once in a lifetime kind of experience.
We actually drove about 13 hours from the city of Kiev to get to the village, it was very hard to get there because there are no actual car lanes to the village, it’s very very secluded— we had to drive a jeep on top of big rocks so it was quite extreme and fun. At some locations of the village there were people who didn’t even have a television, computer or cellphone! It was so cool to see what a simple life some people are living.
The single comes off your new self-titled EP – why name the EP after yourself?
Well, it was actually suppose to have a different name at first, but after a lot of thinking we’ve realized it is best to keep it simple and just let the music speak for itself.
How was the recording and writing process?
We definitely had a lot of challenges along the way, it was really important for us to really find the sound and the music that we were imagining in our heads and that can be quite a process..
At times it was very hard, I felt very insecure about my writing at first, had a lot of struggles with myself, but I’ve decided to let that go and keep going no matter what, and I’m really glad that iI did because now when I listen to the final results I’m so proud of it, it feels like a part of me.
What aspect of your life did you get to explore on this record?
Everything that was constantly bothering me and holding me back, each song is about something completely different, from struggling with depression and emptiness to trying to figure out my relationship and friendships.
Any plans to hit the road?
Not in the next couple of months, but definitely by the end of the year!
What else is happening next in Grace Blue’s world?
We just had a show last night at The Silverlake Lounge and it was so much fun! We have another show coming up on August 2nd at The Mint in Los Angeles.
We’re planning more shows soon and of course our debut EP is about to be released next month, so stay tuned.
