INTERVIEW: The Faceplants

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you very much! We’re fantastic. It has been a really exciting year so far. We’re excited to have the opportunity to talk to you about it!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Who I Am Inside”?

Absolutely. ‘Who I Am Inside’ is an extremely special song to us, not just as a band, but as individuals. When I crafted the first sketch of the song, I knew I was tapping into something that I had never explored before, and I remember having the most energizing and electrifying feeling once it was completed. It came quick, in 20 minutes… and some say the best songs come fast!  All I knew was that we had something special on our hands. This was a turning point for the band.

I feel I have really found my VOICE as songwriter and because of that, we have found our IDENTITY as a band. It started with ‘Who I Am Inside’. It is as personal and as honest as one can get in a song, so it’s both exciting, while at the same time somewhat scary.

It is a song about battling inner conflict and the fight to not succumb to corruption. It’s a dark, yet beautiful dance into both the light and the shadows of our lives.

All I want to do is write music we’re passionate about and hope that the listener can relate and share that emotion with us. With that said, we couldn’t be more excited about ‘Who I Am Inside’.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

‘Who I Am Inside’, like all of the songs that will be included on our upcoming LP were inspired by and lyrically taken from actual personal journal entries. Like I mentioned above, ‘Who I Am Inside’ was the first step into my newly found voice as a songwriter, and it was directly inspired by the random notes, scribbles, and paragraphs I had previously jotted down in a daily journal. I didn’t intent on creating songs from these writings. It happened organically. It allowed me to understand what kind of writer I was, and grow to be the writer I am today. It was a liberating moment and it taught me a lot. Everybody’s journey to ‘self-discovery’ is different, and it is ever- evolving. ‘Who I Am Inside’ was our first step.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

100%. We have full control over every aspect of our career and we pride ourselves on being a band that has grown to wear all hats. We felt it was time we dive into the visual content world and start crafting our own videos from the ground up. Wrapping up the shoot for ‘Who I Am Inside’ in May, was the first time I had independently written, directed and edited an entire project. As someone who has a grand vision for both the creative andbranding of the band, this experience couldn’t have been more rewarding. It’s just such an exciting feeling to create something from nothing, and build an idea from the ground up. We can’t wait to show you.

How was the recording and writing process?

Like mentioned above, we really love to craft everything ‘in-house’. This relates directly to the recording process. ‘Who I Am Inside’, like most of our songs, are originally written on an acoustic guitar (or piano). Once the idea is crafted and I have a big enough vision for the production and individual instrumentation, I will take it to the rest of the guys to have them throw their personal flare on. This is where the song comes to life. After the idea is complete, Garrett (Guitar) will craft the demo, and with both of us producing it, create a polished mock-up version.

After the idea is crafted, the vision is complete, and the demo is done, we then take it to Ben Kaplan to record the final version.

What was it like to work with Ben Kaplan and how did that relationship develop?

Amazing! As an artist, it is SO IMPORTANT to team up with the PROPER producer, someone who understands YOUR vision and what you want to accomplish with your songs and career. It is a scary feeling to ‘hand over’ and have someone else work on your songs, your babies, so we made sure 100% without a doubt that we team up with someone who is the absolute perfect match. Ben is that man. He understands what we are all about, and we have grown into such great friends over the past 3 years working together. We will always turn to Ben to translate our vision and help us create magic in studio. He’s the man.

How much did he influence the song?

He inspired what you hear as the final version a great deal! The song is ALL ABOUT the ‘vibe’, and that’s what Ben is best at – creating the right vibe. Ben produced a track and replicated a vision that originated in my head… perfectly. I couldn’t be more happy about how it turned out!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Yes! And it’s coming along great. Better than great! I gave you the brief history of how this collection of songs came together, and without giving too much away right now, just know that with this record, we will be the voice for all the people that are following their passion, and give inspiration to those that are trying to find theirs. These songs mean the world to us.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

If everything goes as planned, spring 2018!

After being on the scene for a decade now – would you say this time around fans will get to hear the band’s final sound?

It is all about hard work, constant development, and patience. I am confident in saying that I have been a student of music and the industry that surrounds it for a solid decade.By no means, doesthis mean that we are a developed, fine-tuned machine that is part of ‘the scene’ for a decade. Not at all. This takes time and patience is key. We are in this for the LONG-HAUL and we are playing for the long game. No quick in-and- out with us. It has taken us years to find our voice, and ‘Who I Am Inside’ is the first step in a collection of songs, that is just the beginningof our journey.

Any plans to hit the road?

Oh, without a doubt! It is a special moment right now being in ‘content creation mode’, but we are itching to get back out on the road again and perform for a live audience. It’s what we do best. We started our career as a band on the road, developing our live show, and learning what it takes to be PERFORMERS. Night after nightit is where we shine. We learned what is was like to ‘be a band’ by touring Canada. Cramming into a van, sleeping in tight quarters, driving for hours on end, having our personal space invaded – haha! It’s taught us a lot. We learned about our emotional dynamics as band members and as best friends. Those beginnings made us the live band that we are today, and we will be back out again so very soon.

What else is happening next in The Faceplants’ world?

It is so important to document our journey. The two most important assets in 2017 are TIME and ACCESS, and we give our fans BOTH. With this song, andthe forthcoming album we are building a community. A group of like-minded passionate people that want to go out and accomplish THEIR goals and their desires. That is what this collection of songs is all about. Through documenting our lives via Snapchat, Instagram Stories, and on our bi-weekly vlog entitled, ‘The Journey’, we are creating a tight-knit relationship with our fans that is uniquely 100% our own. It’s personal and it’s in-depth. Together, we are building a foundation that can only be built upon. We can’t wait for what is in store.
