Thurston Moore & Red Gallery / Kamio Present: MUSICS (1975-79) Exhibition & Live Performance

The Red Gallery is excited to announce the first of two very special exhibitions in collaboration with Eva Prinz and Thurston Moore and their imprint Ecstatic Peace Library

This first event will see the launch of a new Ecstatic Peace Library book entitled Musics at the Red Gallery on Rivington Street which is open to the public from Friday the 7th of July until Sunday the 16th of July 2017.

The Musics book compiles all twenty-three issues of London’s very first zine for improvisers, which focused around the activities of sound art, field recording, free improvisation, live electronics, 20th century composition, and audio culture.

Operating between 1975-79, with six issues per year, Musics was an interdisciplinary journal rooted in a true DIY ethic. The publication first launched in Spring of ‘75, with the tagline: “an impromental experivisation arts magazine” and a manifesto that proposed the destruction of artificial boundaries. The magazine linked Free Jazz, the academic ministrations of John Cage, Cornelius Cardew and K. Stockhausen, and indigenous and non-European music. Musics was also significant in the discussion of traditional Asian instruments as paths of equal value for the performance of music.

Red Gallery / Kamio will be presenting the original Musics artwork, with a special opening reception on the evening of the 6th of July that includes an improvised concert with Thurston Moore and the Musics editors and musicians David Toop and Steve Beresford, together with other live and DJ performances and an opportunity to view and purchase the book.
