INTERVIEW: Rylands Heath

Hi Rylands, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

We’ve been great thank you! Thank you for having us!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Into The Night”?

The song, at its core, is about freedom and not only achieving liberation through love and relationships but also a more literal kind of freedom from ideas and rules. It’s a bit darker and heavier than some of our other releases and I think that gets at a more complex idea of running into the unknown, which doesn’t always end well. But ultimately it’s still got a pop-y, singalong streak to it that tips it towards the more feel good vibes.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

There’s no real life experience that inspired it necessarily, but a (quite obscure) reference I was drawing upon was the Shakespeare play ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’. The idea of escaping the rules of society for a while and entering the unruly and the unknown is central to the song and informed the writing process. For influences in sound and style, I think the mixture of guitar and synth is rooted in a love for The Wombats who have mastered that combination.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

We are considering ripping of James Corden and trying to do a country lane style carpool karaoke type  thing with our videography Adam Cooper, just trying to figure out how and if we could even pull it off, so watch this space lol.

How was the recording and writing process?

I think the song started with the first verse and then came up with the chorus, which is the opposite of the way I normally start writing. It was more guitar heavy to begin with but after I took the song to James, he came up with a synth part that I think compliments the guitar stabs in the chorus. In terms of recording, we like to go very in depth on the demos we make together so it was mostly a case of transferring those ideas on to the proper version but there are some bits of production magic that we can’t quite get on our own!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Although we’ve got no particular plans for an album we’re always writing and working on songs which I suppose begins to build up a pool of material that might eventually end up on a record but at the moment that’s very far in the future! Ideally we would put out an EP in the first few months of 2018 and then take it from there. So far we’ve just been releasing individual tracks while we try and find our sound.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No not yet, as mentioned above hopefully release an EP at the start of next year, but before that our next release after “Into The Night” is a song we recently started playing live called “Skin”, which will be released on the 26th July. It’s crazy to think that “Skin” will be the 10th song we’ve released this year, it’s gone so quick.

Any plans to hit the road?

I suppose in some sense we are already on the road! We’re trying to play as many shows as possible this summer and we’ve already played in Birmingham, Brighton and London, as well as our hometown Luton, with many more to come including the Old Blue Last on 5th July and Jimmy Festival in Ipswich which has got an old favorite of James, Scouting For Girls headlining as well as KT Tunstall and an upcoming band we are really loving at the moment from Birmingham called Riscas.

What else is happening next in Rylands Heaths’ world?

Well it was quite surreal when our last release Rollercoaster was featured on ITV’s “This Morning” yesterday with Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby, it was weird but cool hearing them talking about us on TV before introducing the song.

We was aware that it was going to happen just didn’t know when. It was a nice surprise, plus my mum loves the show so win win.  Otherwise we’ve got more shows coming up this summer and as mentioned before our final release of the summer called ‘Skin’ coming out at the end of July. Hopefully we’ll have some music videos out soon and we will probably release another 3 songs for the winter, so lots to keep an eye out for from us!
