INTERVIEW: ROJOR

Hi Rojor, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

I’m good thanks, really looking forward to the launch of my new single.  It’s great to a part of VENTS!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Only Luv Can Hurt”?

I wrote the song a while back and had it as a piano/vocal arrangement on various demo CDs I’d play to myself while bouncing ideas around my head. When I finally got around to the studio session the whole thing came together relatively quickly as it has a real driving energy. I think it has a melancholy vibe, which helps portray the lyrically story and it has a definite 80s electro pop feel, which is very current.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I tend not to write as a result of a particular event , for me it’s usually an emotion or an ethereal idea which inspires me. I guess ‘Only Luv Can Hurt’ is a bitter sweet love song. ‘I love you and you love me’ can be pretty ordinary, but ‘I love you and you love someone else’ – now that’s interesting subject matter for any writer. How can something so sweet taste so bitter? I think looking at love from a darker perspective always makes for an interesting song.

How was the recording and writing process?

I usuallywrite and demo songs at home in my ‘home studio’ and then I’ll listen to the basic tracks over a few weeks/months – editing lyrics, chords, structures and arrangements until I’m happy with the general direction of travel. Then it’s into the recording studio with my producer to pull the project together and create the finished version.

Can you tell is a little about the new video?

The video was filmed at ‘Temenos’, which is a fantastic art installation on Teesside in England.  The video has a cool film noir look to it. It has an intense energy and a futuristic feel. I know the Teesside skyline inspired some of the imagery used in the film Blade Runner and you can certainly feel a Sci-Fi vibe in the ‘Only Luv Can Hurt’ video.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

When I finished last year’s ‘Fatally Beautiful’ album I carried on recording.  I usually take a break but I just kept on writing/recordingand ‘Only Luv Can Hurt’ came out of one of those first sessions post ‘Fatally Beautiful’ – so I guess it’s almost an extra chapter in the book, a sequel if you like. Any reader who loves the new single will certainly enjoy Fatally Beautiful as it’s coming from the same place. But yeah there will definitely be a new album in 2018.

Would you be diving into dark corners of love and relationships?

It’s certainly a fruitful area of exploration for any writer and music is such a powerful way to express emotions both dark and joyful. But I also like to put at least one track on an album with a social conscience, after all we live on a planet with wonderful creatures and 8 billion other humans and we all need to find loving &peaceful ways to get along.

Any plans to hit the road?

Absolutely! – I’m looking forward to rehearsals in August before putting on some live shows in the Autumn.  Tour dates will be posted on the live page at my official website www.rojor.com

What else is happening next in ROJOR’s world?

Putting together a top live band is next on my agenda. I want to share the songs with the live audience and you’re all invited. I’m acutely aware that any opportunity that comes my way arrives because of the love and generosity of my fans and they are a special and wonderful band of followers. Why not come along for the ride? I look forward to seeing you at one of my gigs.
