INTERVIEW: Anjulie

Hi Anjulie, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great! I’m drinking a smoothie with both chocolate and kale in it.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Where The Love Goes”? Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I wrote Where the Love Goes with my insanely talented and also just insane friends Fran Hall, Kyle Moorman and Pete Thomas on a sunny day in the dead of LA winter. We drank flavoured sugarless sparkling water and ate organic salads with assorted nuts and turnt all the way up in colourful pyjamas and socks with flip flops to craft this deliciously fun bangalanger after a real life group therapy session about trying to find something real in the soulless decrepit teenaged wasteland that we sometimes find ourselves in.

I love the Dragonflies film. How was the film experience for Dragonflies?

Thank you! it was specifically written, produced and directed for the Canadian Women’s Foundation for their campaign to End Violence Against Women, later it was adopted by the Blue Heart Campaign with UN Women to End Human Trafficking. For the video Racheal McLaren and Yannick LeBrun from Alvin Ailey danced and it was choreographed by Jamar Roberts. We shot on a rooftop in Brooklyn.

How was the recording and writing process?

It was one of the first songs I wrote and produced from the ground up so it was different for me because I’m used to collaborating. It’s hard making music completely by yourself because you don’t have anyone to bounce creative ideas off of but in the end I learned to trust my own instincts.

What role does Canada plays in your music?

Canadians have always supported my music and I love them for it! I go back every 2 months to reconnect, have great Indian food and ride the TTC.

Does the new single mean we can expect a new material – how’s that coming along?

Yes! I put out 5 just this month! It’s going great. I’m loving working with different labels and licensing my music independently. It’s an amazing time to be an indie artist.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

Yes my new song “Dream Again” comes out June 30th and my next single with Spinnin will be out in August.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yes! I have shows coming up for Canada 150 in the GTA in September.

What else is happening next in Anjulie’s world?

I’m producing and writing for a couple new artists, putting out some more dj collaborations including another one with TheFatRat who I love, also doing more solo records that I’m really excited about. Other than more kale and chocolate smoothies
