INTERVIEW: The Wandering Hearts

Hi Chess, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hey! Thanks very much, we’ve been great!

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Wish I Could”?

Sure! Wish I Could was one of the first songs we wrote as a band so means a lot to have it out for everyone to hear. It’s about two people in a relationship that isn’t working, and is coming to an end, but it’s hard to see a way out. Too much has happened and it’s beyond repair and you wish you could just go back to the start. It’s bittersweet.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

I think we have all experienced something similar in our lives so each of us can relate in our own way – and we hope people listening will be able to do the same.

How was the recording and writing process?

We have loved writing and recording. We have only been together for 18 months so there’s been a lot of getting to know each other along the way. Writing is quite personal and exposing so it’s great that we have all grown to trust in one another. Some writing sessions just end up being therapy sessions with gin! For us, it’s all about the truth in the lyric and the harmonies so having the opportunity to tell our story is something very special.

What was it like to work with Peter Hammerton and how did that relationship develop?

We were lucky enough to be introduced to Pete very early on. He has been with us pretty much from the start so he really gets our sound and what we are trying to achieve on this record.

What was it like to find success in an instant?

Well, although it may sound like this has been a bit of an overnight success for us, it’s meant that all the years of hard work we’ve individually spent writing, gigging and working to pursue music is finally paying off. We feel very lucky to be able to get our music out into the world.

How has Chris Stapleton and Of Monsters and Men influence your writing?

We’ve had people compare us to Of Monsters and Men, which is a great compliment as I love their music. We all have different influences from folk to pop to rock n roll and blues but Chris Stapleton has been a huge influence individually and collectively for us all. The truth in his lyrics and his storytelling are an inspiration – not to mention his flawless vocals. He makes us all want to be better!! A masterclass in making music!

How’s your new album coming along?

It’s coming along nicely, thanks! We’ve been recording at The Premises Studios in Hackney which has become a second home for us! We love it there. We are really happy with how it’s all going and are hoping for it to be out after the festivals…so not long now!

Any plans to hit the road?

It’s festival season so we have a busy summer ahead of us and we can’t wait! We love playing shows – come and say hi!
