‘Ugly Youth’ is the debut album from The Magnettes and is due for release on DigSin on 30th June 2017.
It’s glitter punk pop that packs a killer punch, delivered by three twenty somethings who grew up in the tiny Twin Peaks’-esque town of Pajala in the remote northern corner of Sweden above the Arctic Circle, where the sun refuses to rise in winter. This remote region has a minority language called Meänkieli, a language that was forbidden in Sweden until 1957 and today only spoken around 50 000 people. The Magnettes celebrate their roots and incorporate Meänkieli and the area’s old folk music into their infectious and inimitable songs.
From the opener ‘Killers In A Ghost Town’, about being the weird punk kid in a small sleepy town, acting out and breaking free of expectations and choosing to be an outsider, to the album’s closer ‘Parking Lot’, that addresses the pain of losing friends to addiction, this is a searing soundtrack for adolescent misfits and malcontents everywhere.
The band describe the themes of the album as being “mainly about adolescence and identity, coming to terms with who you are and finding your place in the world. It’s also about friends, fucking, fighting and drinking. One pretty central theme for the album was the idea of an alternate universe where the tables were turned, the freaks had taken over, the goths were cheerleaders and cool kids, and being weird was just normal.”
The Magnettes are a fearless 21st Century fuck-pop trio who think ugly and weird is cool and that the patriarchy needs to be crushed. Right now. The band is Rebecka Digervall, Sanna Kalla and Tomas Backlund. They’ve released critically acclaimed singles, which have all received huge support from Spotify and key bloggers including Perez Hilton – and toured incessantly.
Speaking to CLASH about their single, ‘Renegades’, The Magnettes say, “This is about getting bruised up on one of those Northern summer nights when the sun never goes down. Vittula, mentioned in the second verse, is the traditional name of a part of Pajala where people had lots of babies. The literal translation of it is The Pussy Moor’.”

“Say what you want to say. Do it as loud as you want. Be different, be weird, be ugly, be too much, fuck as much as you want and question everything.” The Magnettes’ Manifesto
