Leah Martin, a singer based in Chattanooga, TN, is readying the release of a five song EP of new songs written, arranged and recorded by producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Anupam Shobhakar. Titled Freedom Beckons, it features a backing ensemble of 10 musicians including Shobhakar and Joel Harrison on guitars and an international selection of guest players—Santiago Liebson (piano & organ), Michael Sutton (drums & percussion), Michael Gam (bass), Phillip Chaiken (bass), Trina Ramamurthy Basu (violin), Kensuke Shoji (violin), Megumi Saruhashi (viola) and Adam Maalouf (cello). Mastered at Sterling Sound by Randy Merrill (Adele, Tove Lo), Freedom Beckons is a striking and multi-faceted work spanning the worlds of rock, jazz and pop anchored by Martin’s piercingly luminescent vocals. The EP will be released in mid-summer with a full length album due in early 2018. Martin will perform with full band at The Rockwood Music Hall on July 9th and DROM on August 4th. Details below. Leah Martin’s inspiration for Freedom Beckons lies in both her world travels and strong inner spirituality. Martin met Kolkata-born and Brooklyn-based Shobhakar while in Mumbai and established an inimitable musical bond that withstood the horrors of the terror attacks on the city. Shobhakar was key in bringing out some of Martin’s darker musical vision with a diverse range of influences and international mix of musicians—aggressive guitars mix with strings and percussion to intense effect as her vocals rise above the orchestrated songs.
Says Martin: “It’s an ode to all our musical influences and to everyone we’ve ever loved or broken– taking the nectar from all these beautiful genres and naturally crafting our own unique sound. “
