If you had told me prior to today that a classical cover version of David Bowie hit ‘Life on Mars’ was in the works, I would have baulked at the prospect. However, in soprano Joanna Forest’s latest single, my cynicism has been laid to rest.
The new track is a surprisingly effective conversion, with the dramatic chorus of the original in particular lending itself to a memorable classical crescendo. Other orchestral flourishes lend an ebb and flow to proceedings, and some of the tiny details of the arrangement – such as tiny flute lines and string scales – make this a very compelling version of a decades old classic.
You can hear more where this came from too – the single is out now, as is the full number one album ‘Stars Are Rising’. Listen here
