Whatsup VENTS, Everything has been blessed. I’m at a beautiful summer solstice gathering back home in the Toronto area.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Comah”?
Comah is a collaboration between myself and my production team Bus Up Shop (consisting of Ernesto Barahona and Nick Tateishi who played the guitar solo) and after we had written the hook and I had written my verse, we added in Action Blaxxs. It’s my latest single on my upcoming self titled EP. It’s got a wicked dance vibe for the summer parties.
Did any event, in particular, inspire you to write this song?
My inspiration for the song is a collection of many events. When I’m really vibing with a lady, some times I have to remind myself not to get too serious too quickly because relationships are so much stronger more fun when you build it up as friends and release all the pressure. Sometimes you just wanna mess around with someone.
How was the film experience?
I had never been to Jamaica before, and when Action told me he was going there I only had 5 days to be there because of time constraints. I brought my videographer teammate Kenny McLaughlin, and we hustled every single day to make sure we were getting footage. I had to find a dance team on Instagram and coordinate them coming to Reggae Hostel where we were staying. We filmed all the way to the very last sunset. It was an amazing experience in Kinston, but also pretty hectic.
How were the recording and writing processes?
Comah has been in the works for a long time, it was one of the first songs that my team and I dug into. This means that I’ve spent tens of hours tracking vocals on it from every demo session and finally being in the studio tracking the real thing. I even eventually got my producer Nick to throw in a sort of Santana-style guitar solo in the bridge.
What was it like to work with Action Blaxxs and what did he brought up to the table?
I met Action totally randomly in a parking lot where I was waiting for a friend, writing a song on my guitar. Him and I instantly vibed together and I knew I had to get him on the perfect song with me. When he got to the studio he took one listen to Comah and cut his verse right then and there. Completely freestyle. Absolute magic.
Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?
Definitely my first EP album on the way, but there will be another single in the mix very soon! I also went to Trinidad earlier this year, so I got an upbeat soca tune that I’m coming with next month.
Any tentative release date or title in mind?
I’ve been pondering over a title, but I’m feeling this one has gotta be self-titled cause there’s a wide variety of directions on it. EP release will be August or September.
Any plans to hit the road?
I’m hitting the road in the fall for sure, but in the mean time I’m doing some flyouts for some cool opportunities, including to Utah for Reggae Rise Up festival on Aug 19 where I’ll be joining the bill with J Boog and Slightly Stoopid.
What else is happening next in Jungle Man Sam’s world?
Some time in the coming week or two I’ll release a little video documentary/interview with Action and myself about the song, with some of the extra travelling footage and back stories about the track and the video.
