INTERVIEW: JoAnna Lee

Hi JoAnna, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Thank you! I’ve been great, getting into the groove of the summer and am getting excited about the upcoming release of my album “So Free”

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Real Thing”?Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

The Real Thing is one of the newest songs I’ve written. It’s probably one of my most favourite songs to perform live because I can take myself back to the feeling of when I wrote it every time I perform.  When I wrote this it  truly captured the moment of a beginning romance and the excitement you get with not knowing where it may lead.

How was the film experience?

I had a great time recording this video, not only did I get to film it in my hometown of Bend, Oregon; one of my favourite local videographers Tim Cash, was able to capture some pure moments on film, don’t want to get too personal, but the scenes he captured were very sincere and “in the moment” … Something I’ll be able to remember for the rest of my life.

The single comes off your new album So Free – what’s the story behind the title?

So Free I feel is my life’s anthem. It is that moment I decided to let go and stop caring about what others thought about me, and the expectations they had for me. I took all the negative thoughts and feelings I had been carrying on my shoulders and finally let them go and was free to just do me.

How was the recording and writing process?

To be honest I’m not the biggest fan of the recording process, it wasn’t super easy. Even working with some great producers on this project, they all had their own way of doing things. Going into this never have recorded anything before and Between feeling intimidated by the pressure of getting things right in a timely matter as well as contact lay second guessing myself on my vocals overall it was a very uncomfortable experience. The writing process is much more natural to me.

How has Austin have influence in your writing?

Austin is a hub for very talented musicians who i learned a great deal from, its hard to not be inspired in such a creative environment. Id say my biggest influences come from the people i meet in everyday life.

What aspect of freedom did you get to explore on this record?

I’m not going to give the actual number of years it’s taken to get this album right, but I will tell you this. Iv had all the freedom iv needed to get my sound to where i am proud to show the world my music. Its been a long journey and iv had to learn to trust myself to let go and be free in every process of creating my art.

Any plans to hit the road?

YES, I’m so excited to be coming to London at the end of July to play a few shows. Also i will be playing in Dubai at the end of the year, as well as playing locally in the states.

What else is happening next in JoAnna Lee’s world?

Right now its all about the music, we are all super busy trying to get everything in place for the album release. I would like Thank everyone for reading and am excited for everyone to hear my debut  album “So Free”. It’s just a small reflection of who I am, and am excited for all the great things to come.
