Independent singer/songwriter Kev Minney is announcing his astronomically-inspired debut album, ‘Stories of the Sky’ due for release 8th September 2017 and shares a new video for the track ‘Chaos in the Sky’.
“I’m very happy and proud to release my debut album,” Kevin explains, “It started with just one song ‘Dark Stars’. I was showing an interest in astronomy, so naturally that inspired my songs. I met up with local producer Jag Jago, who has a reputation for perfectionism and a high work ethic. Straight after we recorded that first song, I knew I wanted to record a whole album. The next songs ‘Just Another Day’, ‘Gravity’, and ‘Can you feel it too’ were all space-inspired and naturally linked in well.
‘Chaos in the Sky’ is a personal song to me,” he adds, “It represents the overcoming of any difficulties that life can present. I didn’t want to hold anything back: I have always believed in wearing everything on a sleeve.”
Drawing inspiration from musical giants such as Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Nick Drake, Kev has blended his creative guitar playing with traditional pop melodies. As a virtuoso acoustic guitarist, Minney uses open tunings to create a unique haunting and melodic sound.
The process of creating the album has proved a rollercoaster of excitement, involving collaboration with an impressive array of musicians, video teams, artists and so forth. As an independent artist, without the backing of a record label. Kev was lucky to have help from the Arts Council in the form of a grant awarded in 2016, so Kev has been able to pay every single artist involved: musicians, artists, videographers, and a Mercury- nominated producer, masterer, and promoter.
“My whole record is based around space themes,” Kev told Acoustic Presents Mag. All of the songs on ‘Stories of the Sky’ have their own creative focuses, with strong stories, alternate worlds and impressive artistry. While the music is important, Kev also believes strong visuals enhance the songs. “There’s a story that the artist sees when writing a song and it’s great to be able to put that across. The visual has a double impact when folks first listen to the songs. If they can see and hear it, they’ll probably feel it a little more too.”
RNR (Rock N Reel) Magazine were impressed with Kev Minney: “Featuring some tasty acoustic guitar work and understated accompaniment, there’s a sensitivity to his heartfelt and personal songs that prove him to be beguiling writer and performer.”
The video for ‘Chaos in the Sky’ will be released on 30th June.
Working closely with Mercury-nominated producer Jag Jago, Kev has created an album which combines his superlative guitar playing and distinctive vocals with a modern electronic sensibility and orchestral serenity.
