INTERVIEW: Colette Kavanagh

Hi Colette, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi VENTS! I’m great, thank you.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Once In A Lifetime”?

It’s a love song (I’m very fond of writing a good old love song) about finding that “Once in a Lifetime” love. Finding a person who loves you for all that you are, flaws and all.  Sounds cliché but it’s not, I found him when I was just 19!

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Well I mostly try to write songs from life events.  Sometimes when I’m writing a song, a particular phrase in this case “Once in a Lifetime” might come to mind and then I start to work around it with my own memories and life events and bring it to life with the chords and melody that way.

How was the recording and writing process?

Normally I just write when I feel inspired by something in particular, something I can relate to and then I record my “demo” (me and my guitar at home) and send it to my producer in Jam Studios, Martin Quinn.  This song was going around in my head for quite some time and when I spoke to Martin about it we started to work on the recording and the overall general feel of the song.  It normally takes a full long day in the studio to get it sounding right.  Martin is an amazing producer and I’m really grateful for all his expertise and help!

Does the new single mean we can expect a new album – how’s that coming along?

Oh yes, I’m working on new songs and hope to finish a full album September or October.

Any tentative release date or title in mind?

No, I haven’t thought about that yet.  It’s baby steps for me at this moment.  I’m taking my time making the album and enjoying writing new songs.  It’s all about the love of it for me right now.  I just want to make music to inspire and connect with people and hopefully you will get a little view of what’s going on in my mind and heart.

What aspect of relationships and other emotions would you be exploring in this material?

A lot of what I write is about love, loss and hope. I’m not really into anything too deep and I do like to keep things simple with my lyrics.  I try to connect with vocals that are, as I say to my producer “close”, like I’m actually close to you and softly singing the words to you. To me it feels more personal and you can sit with the headphones on a listen like I’m actually there with you.  I love that idea.

Any plans to hit the road?

For now, I’m getting a body of work together and will hopefully be on the road by the end of the year here in Ireland and Europe with my new album.  I’d love to eventually play in the US (I’ve never been before) and this would be an amazing opportunity to showcase my album over there too.

What else is happening next in Colette Kavanagh’s world?

Well, besides promotion of my new song “Once in a Lifetime” here in Ireland and abroad, I hope to be back in the studio in the next month to finish a few more songs to add to my album.   I’m hoping that my music will reach more people and that I will be able to make music for a long time to come and that one day my two girls will look back and say “hey that was my mammy and she did it and so can I” – the skies the limit!
