Hi Matt, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?
Hey there, thanks for having me!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Textbook Tyranny”?
Textbook Tyranny was written about my frustration of going through education. Achieving a degree. And I still somehow ended up in the job center applying for jobs seekers. A very cheery pop song filled with optimism of course…
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Seeing mediocrity rewarded everywhere in life.
How was the film experience?
The video was shot by the wonderful Sam fenton. It was a fun video to shoot. The video actually features every member featured on the new record.
The single comes off your new album Insight To The Mind Of A Million Faces – what’s the story behind the title?
I mean we all have a story but that phrase kinda came from the identikit mindset of the masses. The I watch coronation Street and x factor. And go out every Friday boring bastards of the world. Each song represents a different part of humanity to me.
How was the recording and writing process?
Standard. No songs ready until we hit the studio. We went to record and the record came out the way it did. I don’t over think recording. The record is already written months before subconsciously. I’m just the filter to the studio.
How has Steven Wilson influenced your writing?
See I never really liked SW until I heard his record Hand Cannot Erase. That record blew me away and I have subsequently become a very big fan. He has certainly taught me to leave space and let music breath a bit more.
Where did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics?
I didn’t. I just wrote nonsensical things I wanted to vocalise. Lyrics are the least important element of my music.
Any plans to hit the road?
We have a headline show planned for August 18th at Rebellion in Manchester! This is where we will unveil the new material. We also have some great festival appearances across the summer!
