Hey there, thanks for having us! We’re doing great!
From all the songs out there, why did you choose to cover Nirvana’s “Smell Like Teen Spirit”?
About six months ago, we did a live stream with Coca-Cola & Moe’s Grill. They asked us to cover a song from a departed artist so we turned “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana into an acoustic lullaby. Kurt Cobain was a huge musical influence for both of us in our teenage years, and “Smells Like Teen Spirit” has always been one of our favorite songs. It was their first live stream to break 100k views in 24 hours. This lead to us recording the song and making the album called Grunge Lullaby, covering/honoring our favorite 90’s Grunge songs with a mellow acoustic twist! Smell
What was the approach you were aiming for with this cover?
We wanted our audience to hear the song for how beautiful it is. When you strip away the “grunge” sounds, you can really hear the melodies and lyrics which are actually stunning. So less is more. We wanted to keep it simple acoustic.
The single comes off your new album Grunge Lullaby – what’s the story behind the title?
Coming off the success of the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” live stream, we wanted to make an album that turned our favorite grunge songs into acoustic lullabies. We all LOVE these 90’s songs but don’t necessarily want to hear loud music anymore. Everyone needs help sleeping these days, even adults. We hope that our generation can fall back in love with the songs that helped raise them, but in a more chill environment.
How was the recording and re-imagining process?
This was the first album that we produced, mixed, and mastered on our own in our home studio. We also played all the instruments, so the process was different than any other album. We literally just recorded whenever we got inspired. Day or night. We would usually start with a guitar or piano to strip the song back to its bare form. Then we would figure out who is going to be singing where and then start recording.
How did you choose which bands and songs to cover?
We chose our personal favorite songs from the Grunge Era. Also, some grunge songs do not sound great stripped back, so we stuck with the songs that felt right. We don’t believe in forcing magic. You have to let it happen!
Do you tend to take a different approach when you are collaborating with someone else than when you are writing your own original material?
Yes. When we are writing for another artist, we try to listen and bring their vision to life. It’s about following rather than leading. When we write for ourselves, we pull from our own hearts.
Any plans to hit the road?
We would love to! No immediate plans but keeping that door wide open!
What else is happening next in High Dive Heart’s world?
We have an original album that will be ready to follow Grunge Lullaby later this summer. We can’t wait for our fans to hear the original songs we have been writing.
