Following the release of his fourth album ‘A.M.’ in late 2016, Oxford-born artist Richard Walters returns with standalone single ‘Starlight’. Listen here. Glacial and deeply affecting, ‘Starlight’ calls to mind the restrained splendour of The Blue Nile and the soaring elegance of Sigur Rós, perfectly showcasing Walters’ crystalline voice and deftness for a smart, moving lyric.
Produced and mixed by Devon-based soundsmith Patrick J. Pearson (Grace Lightman, Avante Black, Dry the River), the song is sonically both intimate and cinematic, building from bare piano and stark voice up into a dizzying swirl of stirring strings and swelling guitars; it’s a suitably dramatic backdrop for a lyric that appears to deal with the fragility of life itself.
Explaining the motivation behind “Starlight”, Richard Walters says:
“2016 was a strange year…I became a father in the spring, which was (and continues to be) an incredible, life-affirming experience. Then, towards the end of the year, I sadly lost a close friend to cancer…so it felt like 2016 was bookended by these events, one utterly amazing and the other utterly heartbreaking, but both leaving me with an enormous, newfound respect for life and time. ‘Starlight’ is, I suppose, about that sense of nostalgia I felt at those two points, looking back but with one eye on the future.”
As a solo artist, Richard Walters has released four critically acclaimed albums and four EP’s since 2007. His music has featured on a number of US TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Bones, CSI: Miami, Criminal Minds and Revenge.
As a songwriter and collaborator Richard has worked with a number of exceptional artists, writers and producers including Dan Wilson (Adele, Taylor Swift), Bernard Butler (Suede, Duffy), Guy Sigsworth (Bjork, Madonna), Solomun, Gabrielle Aplin, Olafur Arnalds, Way Out West, Alison Moyet and Grace Lightman.
