INTERVIEW: Pawned by Gravity

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Great, thanks for asking.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “All My Might”?

It is a song we really enjoyed writing and recording.
And its sound became a guiding light for the other songs on our new EP. It’s an
attempt at romanticizing the feeling of falling head over heels for someone who
is waaay out of your league. Even though the lyrics refer to this situation as “not
much of a hit” many people seem to think the song is.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yeah, it’s rather funny actually. Alvin, our singer and guitarist, has always been eager to dance but he was never very good at it. He just whipped his hips around all willy nilly.  So we decided to get him an introductory lesson in tango for his 19th-birthday. He just fell in love with the rhythm and wanted to blend the tango rhythm with an indie-rock sound, so we did and “All My Might” was born.

Any plans to release a video for the single?

Not for the single, but we do have a planned recording of a music video for another
track off the EP called “The Memory Lane”.  Recordings are due this summer and it will feature
stalling fun-fairs, bowling alleys and discount roses.

The single comes off your new EP Time and Time Again – what’s the story behind the title?

Time is a big theme throughout the EP which made it an obvious choice.

How was the recording and writing process?

We had these different guitar parts that we all whipped together one afternoon. We banged it out in half an hour and have started to think of it a bit like building LEGOs using a schematic. We all had the same vision and idea with the song and how we wanted it to turn out.

The recordings took place in the middle of the Swedish summer at the Music
Conservatory. Here in Sweden the sun barely sets during June/July so we
recorded all the way into the morning hours with only short breaks for some
beach volleyball at the campus. Thinking back we can’t help but
smile.

Who are your biggest influences and what role did they play on this song?

At the time we were all watching a lot of the older Clint Eastwood movies. So that’s probably where we got the desert sand pouring off the edges and the western twang tumbling through the middle. But most of it came from growing up with the Arctic Monkeys and Led Zeppelin blasting through our Walkmans and roaming the mostly empty streets of Nyköping.

What aspect of relationships did you get to explore on this record?

Several of the tracks on the EP are blunt love songs. It reflects a bit more on the concept of love than on love itself. But it is really for the listener to decide and relate to, their interpretation is as good as ours.

Any plans to hit the road?

Yeah definitely, we’re doing a few shows in Stockholm in the coming weeks and plan on playing at some festivals later on. We will be announcing the dates on our social medias.

What else is happening next in Pwned by Gravity’s world?

We’re hitting the studio with our producer Erik Carlfjord in the summer and plan to record a music video with our director Tim Kammerborn and his crew. Other than that we will just be enjoying skinny dipping in the Baltic Sea and all that the Swedish summer has to offer.
