INTERVIEW: Paper Chains

Hi guys, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Hi! Thank you so much for having us!  We are great and we have been super busy making things happen. How are you?!

Can you talk to us more about your music video “Do It While We’re Young”?

We had a free trip to go to Vegas, so we decided to go and create a video there.  We did not plan anything, we just went out, had some drinks, walked around, felt the energy, and then shot some cool footage.  It was a really refreshing time to get out of LA and just focus on the art.  We shot and edited the video ourselves.

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

Yes!  We are at a weird moment in our generation where things move and change very quickly.  If you don’t follow your dreams your life can pass you by. This song is about seizing the moment and living the life you want to live. Whenever we have ideas, we motivator each other to act on them by saying “Do it while you’re young.” And that’s where the lyrics came from, and then the rest of the song just came together from there.

How was the film experience?

Fun and Freeing.  We made the most out of three days in Vegas. We explored the city and shot as much as we could.

The single comes off your new album Stereo Diamonds – what’s the story behind the title?

Jonny found a store front with a neon light sign that said “Jewelry Electronics Stereo Diamonds.”  We took some photos in front of the pawn shop because it looked really cool. That’s when Jonny ended up giving Lyn Alyson the name Stereo Diamonds.  This EP follows Lyn’s rebirth as “Stereo Diamonds”.

How was the recording and writing process?

We like to write about issues everyone can relate too. Living in a city like LA filled with interesting people, there’s never a shortage of inspiration. All you have to do is walk down the street or talk to a stranger to learn something new. Our recording process is frequent and casual. We have our own studio so we are constantly experimenting with sounds. The magic is when we can match the right musical vibes to a lyric idea and then it all comes together.

How does your DIY approach translates into your music and lyrics as well? Do you tend to explore themes of freedom in your songs as well?

Yes Freedom allows us to create opportunities for ourselves. To be DIY takes a lot of commitment. We try to motivate ourselves and others not to take the easy way out, and to believe that everything they want they can make happen.

Where else did you find the inspiration for the songs and lyrics on this record?

The lyrics are something we all say to each other so they are relatable.  Our sound comes from listening to a lot of different styles of music and finding a common thread of heavy beats and pretty melodies.

Any plans to hit the road?

Nothing we can announce now but we plan to play everywhere.

What else is happening next in Paper Chains’ world?

We are finishing music videos for the Stereo DiamondsEP and recording new music to be released in the fall. And we’re about to launch an online store on our website with merch and redesigned vintage, which has been a passion of ours for sometime!
