INTERVIEW: Hayden Calnin

Hi Hayden, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

Very good thank you. Just busy piecing together the new EP ‘Dirt’.

For those who aren’t familiar with you or your sound yet, how would you describe it?

Easy listening and very lyrical based. I like to tell a story rather than get you moving.

Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Waves”?

‘Waves’ is all based on tension. It never really has a release, it just keeps going. I think it’s a good reflection of its meaning. ‘Waves’ as well as the whole EP that’s coming out soon, is all about mental health and struggles that I find a lot of people in my generation seem to deal with. Some of my closest friends have been battling pretty hard with it over the last few years, and I really wanted to explore the subject and give some awareness to a pretty touchy topic.

How did the single name come about?

I never really know how to name a song, so I usually just pick a word from the lyrics and stick with it.

Did any event/s in particular inspire you to write the material?

Yes. One of my best friends has had a pretty tough last 10 or so months, and it’s an ode to him and what he’s going through. It’s also a little bit of an apology for not always being there for him.

How was the recording and writing process?

Really easy on this one. It doesn’t happen so easy all the time, but this one just spilled out over a couple of days.

How different is this new track from your previous material?

They are always different… This one doesn’t really have a drop, it kind of just lingers the whole way through.

Any plans to tour?

Heading ’round Australia in a few weeks for a couple of shows:

and I’m looking to head back to the UK/EUR later this year.

Why should people pay attention to Hayden Calnin? What’s special about you?

I guess if you are into honest writing and don’t feel like listening to bangers, then you’ll enjoy it.

What else is happening next in Hayden Calnin’s world?

Lately I’ve been doing some producing and mixing work for heaps of artists from around Melbourne and Australia. It’s really nice to be back in that world.

Apart from that, I’ve just been focusing on new music and planning the next thing.
