INTERVIEW: Danny Everitt

Hi Danny, welcome to VENTS! How have you been?

DE: Things are going very well thank you.

Can you talk to us more about your song “Dream Big”?

DE: Sure. What would you like to know?

Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?

DE: A good friend called me one day while he was in the studio recording a new album.  He said he needed one more song and did I have a “toe-tapper?”  I did have a new idea and melody working at the moment.  We discussed the topic of what subject he might be wanting to pursue.  He said we both write love songs so “dream big”.  That became the collaboration starting point.  We exchanged our ideas and he cut in a day or two.  It was a pure co-write.  I made some further changes when I got around to recording the song.  My friend’s name is Shake Russell.  Check him out.

Any plans to release a video for the track?

DE: Nothing concrete at the moment for that song but I am talking to a couple of people about a video for the CD.

Why naming the album after this track in particular?

DE: It’s a universal concept of optimism and hope which we all can use everyday.  Right?

Why taking so long on releasing this material?

DE: I had begun formulating my concept of my next solo release and over time that morphed into a full production project with physical CDs as well as digital download availability.  I had initially thought I would simply master songs in the can for my website, but people who put up the money insisted they wanted physical CDs and I had several new songs that had not yet been recorded. So there you have it.

What’s the story behind the title?

DE: Again, just our way of celebrating forward thinking in life and relationships.

How was the recording and writing process?

DE: This is the second album I have recorded at Jack Saunders’ White Cat Studio here in Houston.  He is an amazing producer/engineer/musician who has just the right temperament for how I work.  A sheer pleasure.

Writing with Shake was also a profound pleasure.  We’ve worked together on stage for many years.  It may be the purest co-write I’ve ever been part of.  I mean, he sent lines, I sent lines back and we agreed on my arrangement, which he shaped to his own style and voilà!  A new song of which we are both very proud was born.

What role does Houston play on your writing?

DE: Houston is my adopted hometown but I write wherever I happen to be when it strikes.  It’s been an amazing trip living and working here over the years.  So many wonderful musicians and patrons of music have found one another I couldn’t ask for more.  I’ve lived in Nashville, Austin, LA, Colorado, Oklahoma and always return to Texas; specifically Houston.  I make my home in The Woodlands, TX now.

How has your musical journey influenced this particular record?

DE:  Rather profoundly actually. Some of these songs were written many years apart from one another.  Others were created in the same flow.  But all are connected to what you refer to as my “musical journey”.  A good way to put it.  Everyone has a journey and everyone is shaped by it.

What aspect of love did you get to explore on this record?

My high school sweetheart came back into my life.  We were finally ready to settle down and take the plunge one more time.  She always surprises me and we both feel the same way about how we look at life with deep gratitude.

Any plans to hit the road?

DE: I would consider going out if it makes sense. Sure. I need an agent.

What else is happening next in Danny Everitt’s world?

DE:  We just got into a new house and feel like we’re finally “home”.  I work as much as I am able and love it.  Honestly, I am quite deep into my next album.  Life is good.
