Hello! I’ve been very well, thanks. Just got back from Sweden, and I’m now very busy writing and recording lots and preparing for my upcoming shows.
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “One of Us”?
I wrote ‘One Of Us’ last year with an awesome Swedish Synthwave producer called Oscillian. We’ve been collaborating lots recently. All vocals were recorded at the legendary Metropolis Studios in London, and mixed by Liam Nolan, who recently won a Grammy for mixing Adele’s album, so we’re all very proud of him.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I was bullied in school, so I ended up isolating myself and I didn’t want to ask for help (I didn’t know how to), and that’s when I found my love for writing and singing. Music was my escape. With ‘One Of Us’ I wanted to share my experience and say to people that may go through something similar “You’re not alone. Don’t be afraid to reach out”.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Absolutely, we’ve already shot the video in a school in Warsaw, with some talented young actors and a great director. It will be released next month.
How was the recording and writing process?
I knew I wanted to write about my experiences as a teenager, and when I heard the instrumental from Oscillian, the top line and lyrics came really easy. The drum rolls give the track a sense of urgency. We tried different versions until we settled for the final one. And we decided to add some different outro vocals at the last minute, which I think worked really well.
What role does Germany play on your writing?
I guess having grown up in Berlin definitely shaped me as an artist. I listened to a lot of Synthpop and New Wave music in the 80’s, German acts like Alphaville and Kraftwerk are a big inspiration.
How’s your new EP coming along?
It’s been great! I’ve had so many positive comments already and a lot of support from the Synthwave community and beyond. They’ve been very patient, waiting for my new material, can’t wait for release day!
Any tentative release date?
Yes, EP release date is 11th August. We’re also releasing it as 12” vinyl and CD.
Any plans to hit the road?
We are currently doing a small UK tour, with shows in Peterborough, Winchester, Brentwood, London and possibly Glasgow. And we’re off to do some shows in Germany in September.
What else is happening next in NINA’s world?
I’m doing a few collaborations with other artists, so there will be more new tracks coming out later this year. Also finishing off my debut album, so starting to plan the release for next year.
