A brand new track from Bright Light Bright Light—the project of vocalist, songwriter and producer Rod Thomas—is out now. Listen to “New York Pretty,” which premieres via Billboard, here.
“New York Pretty” is the first track to debut from Bright Light Bright Light’s forthcoming EP Tales of the City, set for release July 7. The title is taken from the seminal Armistead Maupin series of the same name, and chronicles, in part, Thomas’ move from London to New York.
“It has the same idea as “Big Business” starring Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin—that you’ve been in a place that doesn’t feel right to you, and then one day you find yourself in a place that immediately feels like home,” says Thomas of New York Pretty. “For some, that’s the countryside, a beach, or maybe where they grew up, for me it was New York where everything made sense and I felt the best about myself in a very long time.”
The EP serves as a companion piece to Bright Light Bright Light’s acclaimed 2016 release Choreography, and features Choreography favorite “Into The Night” as well as a new track called “Thinking About It.”
Of “Into The Night” Thomas says, “It’s inspired by the Michelle Pfeiffer and Jeff Goldblum film of the same name—the idea of meeting someone who changes your world in an instant, and whether it’s instinct or almost madness, you follow them to see what happens, no matter what anyone else thinks.”
Tales of the City joins a pair of Cinematography EPs, which feature Thomas’ covers of his favorite songs from film, which have served as major inspirations for the Bright Light Bright Light project.
To celebrate the release, Thomas will play select ,very special dates this summer, including an EP release show July 7 in New York and further shows in Washington, D.C., Nashville and Atlanta. Please see below for full tour routing.
