A: Really great. I like what you’ve done with the place.
Q: Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Down To Earth”?
A: “Down To Earth” is a cool record Myer and I are really proud of; and a great introduction to our “We Are The Aliens” sound and concept. From the perspective of an alien who’s fallen in love with a human girl, we’re able to cover the subject of love from a unique POV. With nods to social issues and some fun sci-fi references it’s really something different.
Q: Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
A: The album needed a love song, something that fit the theme but still connected back in the emotional place of the great love songs. We came to the idea of Alien x Human love, and the implications and thought it would be an interesting idea to explore.
Q: Any plans to release a video for the single?
A: Yes absolutely. There’s a cartoon music video being released alongside the album and single. It depicts the story of our alien and his love interest and it brings the story to life. My fiiancee and I drew the illustrations ourselves and I spent the last few months animating my first cartoon video. Really excited for the world to see it.
Q: The single comes off your new album We Are The Aliens – what’s the story behind the title?
A: We Are The Aliens. It’s a fun lense to point at the world. The idea that humans are aliens to anyone from anywhere else in the universe, and the idea that all life comes from the same energy – so any aliens out there are us. It’s an interesting way to think about our species and our place in this universe. It also puts any squabbles about skin colour and gender in a new light, one that suggests we’re all one – even the one’s who look nothing like us.
Q: How was the recording and writing process?
A: We really took our time on the music. We began in July of 2015, and the album release is timed for June 9 2017. So we really spent 23 months fine tuning the songs and the sound and the voice of “We Are The Aliens”. We added skits and remixed songs into big, epic new versions of songs and allowed the project to breathe and grow over the 2 years. Everything was produced, written, mixed and designed in house. We did have superstar engineer Notion of Illnote studios handle the mix and master of the project, which brought it to a new level sonically.
Q: What was it like to work with Myer Clarity and how did that relationship develop?
A: Myer Clarity is a prodigy. From the first time I heard him perform his original songs over his original production I knew he was a star. Over the coming years, Myer and I toured together in Canada, USA and Europe. We developed a friendship and kicked ideas about music around. When I brought the “We Are The Aliens” album concept to him, he loved the opportunity to get weird. And weird we got. The album’s a perfect excuse to make music and experiment with sounds that otherwise might sit out of place on an album.
Q: How much did he influence the record?
A: Myer influenced it quite a bit. He’s the sole producer on the album, so he really ran with the sounds. Also, his Pop / Rock genre preferences seep into tracks like “Third Rock from the Sun” and “Batshit Crazy”. You can hear his musical influence on every song on the album as well as his tendency to arrange songs in a dramatic manner. Bridges and beat evolutions and super long outros can be easily found on many of the cuts.
Q: What aspect of extraterrestrial life did you get to explore on this record?
A: In addition to our “Down To Earth” record we have some other fun Alien-themed songs. “UFO” includes the chorus “I started this martian shit, and these the mf props I get” and is a braggadocious record about cruising in a UFO with the top down. “Red Light District” tells the story of an alien drug dealer, and “Third Rock from The Sun” is about the first conversation between alien / man.
Q: Any plans to hit the road?
A: Yes, Myer and I are road-dogs. We spend the year touring! He just wrapped up nearly 50 US dates and this summer has us in Europe performing in Netherlands, France, Spain & Luxembourg. I’m hoping to hit the road in America in fall of 2017 as well.
Q: What else is happening next in iLLvibe’s world?
A: It’s going to be an Alien summer of videos and other fun martian-themed content! In the background I’m working on my follow-up solo album and running my independent label “Heavy Aux Records”, we’re distributing Aliens as well as any of my material and a few artists I’m developing via Fontana North. Keep your eyes open for Meghan Norah, an incredible soul artist we’ve recently signed.
