Thanks, good to be here in the virtual realm. We’ve been great— exploring the country and the mind!
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “Dive”?
Dive is a summer splash of a song. We filled it with feelings from a night beach with a new fling. Lighting bugs, fire, water… all the elements. Truth be told, it’s our oldest song!
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
It’s more a mashup of 100 summers spent dreaming in backseats and staying out until the sun came up. The song sounds sunny, but the visuals in our heads are all sticky August nighttime.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
For sure! We’re bubbling with creative ideas for it and collabing with collaborators.
The single comes off your new album – why naming the record after the band?
This is our very first album, and it’s been a long time coming for many of our fans. It’s a record in every sense of that word— a time capsule of a headspace and a place where we created this band and the songs on the record in a rapid surge. We want to say this is the beginning, this is us, this is Coast Modern.
How was the recording and writing process?
I’d say 95% of it was recorded on a laptop in Luke’s bedroom, oftentimes simultaneous to the writing process. We wanted to capture the raw energy of a new idea, so we’d be writing, flowing, and then put down takes that made it to the final print.
Not trying to get into comparison, but the music has this really cool Kasabian and The Police vibe – did any of these groups influence the writing on this record?
We tend to not be influenced heavily by specific bands. There’s just so much different music out there we listen to. I think we’re more inspired by how people made the music. Like the attitude and spirit of someone like Sting, for example. The Beatles, Bowie, Prince… these artists had a special ~vibe~. What can we learn from this?
What aspect of love and sunrises did you get to explore on this record?
We explore the sunrise of personal awakening and the love of humanity and the world. That sounds very hippie and maybe it is, but we believe in positive changes even in hard times.
What made you want to explore these particular themes?
I suppose a sort of existential crisis hit both of us before forming this band. Many of the songs have a subtext of exploring the self, consciousness, awareness, because that’s what we’ve been doing in our personal lives. The sunny vibe on the surface leaks in like the LA sunshine. It’s inevitable living in paradise.
Any plans to hit the road?
Seeing our “fanily” (terrible, cheesy name we recently came up with) across the land is one of our favorite experiences. There is nothing like the electric energy of sharing real, unpredictable, chaotic moments with real people. So yes, more touring, more places, more faces, quicker paces, louder basses.
What else is happening next in Coast Modern’s world?
More weird video action, collabs with other artists, maybe a clothing line… just trying to push the envelope more and more each day. We’re gonna kiss the ground when the album finally drops too.
