Great, thanks! Delighted to be finally sharing new music 🙂
Can you talk to us more about your latest single “The Colour of the Night”?
Over the last few years, I have encountered close personal grief for the first time and this track is about that experience. The melody and movement in the strings are a musical representation of the journey from sorrow and despair to acceptance and hope. Although the person you loved is gone, there is joy in their memory, solace in the time that was shared together and ‘The Colour of the Night’ captures that for me.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
Not one event in particular, but the way I expierenced loss in the last few years was the starting point of this track. Working on it was a great distraction and helped me work through some of the feelings I was experiencing during this time.
Any plans to release a video for the single?
Yes… stay tuned!
Why naming the EP after this track in particular?
For me, this track is the most powerful one on the EP and from the first moment I came up with the title I knew it was the right title for the EP.
How was the recording and writing process?
I wrote this mainly on my laptop and when I was happy went to record the vocals. I enjoyed the whole experience so much and I always find it crazy when an idea, that just started as a tiny blip in your mind becomes something real – something that exists now in a permanent state that didn’t exist before.
What role does Ireland plays in your writing?
I often take inspriation from home. Enniscrone for example is a seaside town in the west of Ireland which I used to visit every Summer growing up. For me this track sums up that time in my life, the feeling of being young and not having a care in the world.
What aspect of grief did you get to explore on this record?
Mainly the journey through it, what it feels like, how it’s expressed and how it’s ever evoling. I think it’s a journey in which you never really reach your destination and I wanted to express that musically.
Any plans to hit the road?
Hopefully yes! and hopefully later this year.
What else is happening next in Elaine Mai’s world?
I’m working on a new remix at the moment which I’m VERY excited about and looking forward to starting work on another project too before the Summer fully kicks off.
