Hey there! Thanks so much for having me. I’m doing great. A bit sleep-deprived from how much work that is needed to be done every day, but I couldn’t be happier about it all.
Can you talk to us more about your latest video “Feels Right At Home”?
Absolutely. Haha it’s one of the most raw ‘official’ videos you’ll probably ever see! I edited together a bunch of home-made submissions from fans all across the world and that’s literally the entire thing.
Did any event in particular inspire you to write this song?
I wrote the song on January 19th, 2016 in the middle of the night. There was this friend group I was a part of that constantly hung out almost every single week and, like the introvert that I am, I would always find a reason to secretly take off during the parties and head home to cuddle with my two cats and watch Netflix. Alone time has always been really therapeutic for me, so I thought nothing of it. Unfortunately I would eventually be called the guy that “ghosts” everybody and leaves without saying goodbye, which bummed me out a bit because I love the relationships I have in my life. With “Feels Right at Home”, I really want to spread the simple message that it’s okay to be alone and there really doesn’t need to be a label attached to wanting to do that. We all have our own quirks that make us who we are and if some of us struggle with socializing more than others, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. It’s pretty funny to me that I want to help people know that they’re not alone in this world by singing a song about how it’s okay to be alone!
What made you want to make a fan-made video?
The video idea came to me one day while I was brainstorming how to engage with my supporters more. You see, an artist can easily respond to a comment on Instagram or a DM on YouTube, but putting the fan in the ultimate spotlight as the main focus for a video sounded way more fun to me! I hope that the release can show that I am more than grateful for the supporters in my life.
How was the filming experience?
Easiest filming experience by far. It took a whopping 15 seconds in my backyard. My girlfriend shot me walking into frame with a couple handwritten posters with the song title and the message, “a music video made by you.”
Why naming the album after this track in particular?
As cheesy as this sounds, it just felt right. I feel like the title captures the organic authenticity of it all.
How was the recording and writing process?
All four songs were recorded solely by Kirk Adolph, Ben Zelico, and myself earlier this year. Kirk lives in Arizona so I packed my car with some equipment, stayed at his house for a few days to record guitar and bass, then headed back home to produce the rest in my bedroom. During all of this, Ben tracked the drums in his house and somehow it all came together pretty seamlessly in the end. I’m so honored to have worked with these talented guys that it makes me want to cry just thinking about it all. As for the writing, I wrote the first and third songs and then co-wrote the second and fourth with a couple buddies of mine all throughout 2016.
What aspect of health and sickness did you get to explore on this record?
In a way, all of the songs talk about the many insecurities of being human and how they can really cloud our minds so much that they prevent us from realizing our true self-worth. I love being transparent and sharing as much as I can about my own mental health journey.
The sales from your EP, “Feels Right At Home”, will 100% be donated towards PSA Behavioral Health Agency. What inspired you to do this?
Yes! What this means is that if you literally buy the EP on any platform, (whether it’s iTunes, Amazon, CD Baby, Bandcamp, etc.), I will give 100% of the earnings away to that organization in Phoenix. To me, not only does this raise some awareness on the importance of supporting indie artists instead of just streaming their content, but it will also support a fantastic cause that I personally resonate with a lot. I really want to make a difference with this EP and I think this is how I could potentially do that.
Any plans to hit the road?
You bet. After my release show in Hollywood on June 2nd, I will be announcing my East Coast tour that will take place in mid-July, so keep your eyes peeled!
What else is happening next in Dylan Dunlap’s world?
Up next on my to-do list: become best friends with Chris Martin. I guess playing a show with them would be awesome too 🙂
